(SALEM) - The $24.72 million Salem Fire General Obligation Bond Measure would:

Add two new fire stations to the community’s emergency response system; replace two existing fire stations; upgrade remaining stations with earthquake strengthening and backup power; and replace the existing fleet of fire trucks.

Nine fire stations currently serve Salem. Salem’s last fire station was built in 1982.

Two new fire stations are proposed:

Station 10 - East Salem

Station 11 - West Salem

Two fire stations would be rebuilt:

Station 5 - West Salem

Station 7 - South Salem

Other fire stations would receive seismic strengthening and emergency back-up power

Fire Trucks:

Current fleet would be 18 years old at time of replacement

Complete replacement:

Would result in quantity discounts

Would reduce training and operating costs

The capital plan recommends replacing:

13 fire engines

2 ladder trucks

2 water tenders

3 grass fire vehicles

1 incident support vehicle

1 aircraft fire/rescue truck

One ladder truck would also be refurbished to provide a reserve unit

Approximate Cost to Taxpayers

Total Cost - $24.72 million

15-year general obligation bond

24.1 cents per $1,000 assessed value

$36.17 in additional taxes per year to the owner of a home assessed at $150,000

Capital Plan Details

Fleet Replacement $9,265,000

New Station Construction $6,800,000

Station Replacement $6,550,000

Station Upgrades

Seismic upgrades $1,271,000

Emergency power $407,200

General upgrades $425,800

$2,104,000

Total $24,719,000
