(SALEM) - Salem firefighters responded to a commercial fire at a foundry located at 1055 Hilfiker Dr SE at 7:34 PM Monday. The first alarm sent 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief.

First arriving firefighters reported that smoke was coming from the east, rear side of the building. Captain Paul Telfer reported that from the back side of the structure, flames could be seen on the interior of the building. A second alarm was called at 7:44 pm bringing additional resources to the fire. Salem firefighters were able to extinguish the interior flames within minutes of their arrival, and then extinguished smoldering waste receptacles that contained metal shavings. The material in the waste receptacles was determined not to be hazardous. According to the owner of the business, Jackie Anderson, the business is a foundry, which makes custom order sand castings of metal. None of the five employees were in the building at the time. No injuries were reported.

The fire is currently under investigation.
