(JHUMRA CITY, Pakistan) - A suicide bomber in northwest Pakistan has wounded a militant commander and killed at least six people. Officials say Maulvi Nazir was one of at least 12 people wounded in the blast Thursday in Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan tribal region.

He is the most prominent militant commander in South Waziristan, with fighters who support the Taliban in Afghanistan and are not hostile to Pakistani authorities.

Senior Pakistani militant leader Mullah Nazir has been wounded in a suspected suicide bombing in the tribal area of South Waziristan, officials say. At least three were killed and six hurt in the blast in the town of Wana. A teenage boy was among the dead he may have detonated explosives near Mullah Nazir's car, reports say.

It is not clear who carried out the attack.

Analysts say Mullah Nazir has formed an alliance with the government and opposes the Pakistani Taliban.

In the past, he has been accused of sending fighters to support the Afghan Taliban and fight foreign and pro-government troops there, rather than focusing attacks inside Pakistan itself.
