Nov-15-2007 19:49TweetFollow @OregonNews Child Porn Investigation Leads to Arrests Over Animal AbuseSalem-News.comPolice serving a search warrant for child porn say they found 24 neglected dogs, and 8 more dead in the freezer.
(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police detectives responded to 4345 Vernon Loop NE in Salem today shortly before 1:00 PM, to serve a search warrant involving a child pornography investigation. The residents of the home were identified as Kevin and Sarah Deal, their two children, ages 15 and 16, and two other juveniles, ages 9 &and 17. Inside the residence Anglemier says, 24 Poodles were found running loose or in cages. "Some of the dogs were near death. There was no water or food out for the dogs. Throughout the residence, dog feces was found caked on the floor, beds, furnishings and clothing items. In the kitchen, there was no clean area for food preparation." He added, "The feces odor was so strong, the some of the Detectives needed to wear breathing respirators while inside the residence. The residence had no garbage service." In the freezer, among frozen food items, police foune eight deceased poodle puppies in plastic bags. Detectives were told that the deceased puppies were placed there until one of the older children could bury them in the backyard. The Humane Society and Marion County Dog Control were the next agencies to respond, they had to deal with the sick and dead dogs. The parents, 45-year old Kevin Lee Deal and 40-year old Sarah Marie Deal, were contacted and taken into custody. The four children were taken into protective custody and released to staff of the Department of Human Services. The child pornography investigation is continuing. Late this afternoon, Kevin & Sarah Deal were booked into the Marion County Jail. They were both charged with four counts of first-degree Criminal Mistreatment, eight counts of first-degree Animal Neglect, and 24 counts of second-degree Animal Neglect. Their bail was set at $140,000 each for the various charges. Editor's note: we listed the ages of this couple incorrectly, stating they were 30-years old, working from the original information sent to us by the Salem Police. We apologize for the error and the story has been corrected _________________________________________

Eight years later, this still gets to me. I am not one of the children listed in this article, but my family hired this family to babysit my brother and me when we were young. I was babysat by them longer because I was younger. I was at their house for most weekends, and at least three days after school as well. I spent a fair amount of time there, and still occasionally have nightmares about things that happened in front of me when I was young. There are so many things that this article doesn't mention, and I don't blame the authors. This brief summary is bad enough to make most people semi-nauseated. One of the few good things that happened was when I was eight, and given one of the dogs that wasn't wanted for breeding. She is now almost eleven and a half years old, and she is doing well. I worry about the fate of the other dogs who were taken to the Humane Society. I thankfully can go to counseling and get help with things that happened there, but dogs can't. I hope the dogs got to feel safe after being removed from that house.

I say those people are sick and should never come out of jail.I mean, what kind of person treats dogs like that?! What's even the point of putting the dogs in the freezer!? To make frosty the snowdog?! Those people are so crazy!
samantha November 27, 2007 7:20 am (Pacific time)
thats so wrong.I agree to threw them in jail.No one should do that to kids and poor animals.

As for Ketazoje, humm I sure don't trust her with my info seeings how she comes home and expresses "HER OPINION" about the goings on in a state agency where our info is to be kept private and confidential by internet blog on her own time. If someone doesnt want to be found by an abuser or stalker you may have sure helped them to find a possible lead. Makes a citizen wonder what else have you expressed your opinion about as for the going ons at your work and our information. So much for trust and respect. I think you seriously are lacking in that department. You know what they say " some people feel the need to have to focus on the crap in everyone else's yard so they don't have to focus on their own" Why not put your "opionion" to good and keep it to yourself.
Jeff Jones November 19, 2007 12:37 pm (Pacific time)
I think anyone who mistreats animals like that should be $%^&$#.
Editor to Jeff: Watch what you suggest, that is not allowed even in general terms

Instead of bashing the DMV for their hiring practices, why hasn't anyone spoken about the fact that children were forced to live in that squallor? That dogs were being sold that obviously were not what they were advertised to be to unsuspecting people who now (if they have seen this article) are wondering about the health, both physical and mental, of their pets and/or service dogs. Let this be a lesson to those who purchase dogs off the internet without actually physically going to the breeders residence to see the conditions that the puppies/dogs are born into and raised in. Puppymills and disreputable breeders are out there and unless you do a good background check on what you are buying you can and will get burned.

Salem-News and the Statesman reported them as being 30, they need to run a correction. People are thinking this was a young couple and I think that is where all this so called sympathy is coming from. Stop attacking an innocent co-worker for doing nothing other than exercising their right to free speech. Have you thought maybe this person feels helpless in their work environment to stop what they see as wrong? From my understanding of state workers rights, is that they have very few when it comes to working with "mentally ill" co-workers, the ADA is there to protect them which is wonderful, however it leaves "normal" people without an recourse most of the time.
unkown November 18, 2007 3:36 pm (Pacific time)
nobody is no being defended in the minds of the people who are posting on this board, but you said "I am much more opinionated, I speak my mind and mean what I say". so speaking your mind you do at whos expense? i think state and non state workers were a little set back when you mentioned where she works and that you know the type of people who work there. it was a put down to not only the bad apples, but the good apples too. anyway, it's a shame this had happened. my heart and pryers go out to the kids. the deals will get their deserved punishment. they are old enough to know between right and wrong!!
Ketazoje November 18, 2007 1:11 pm (Pacific time)
I have to say I find it stange that this person is being defended while I'm being attacked for speaking my mind. You people have made more judgements about my character and work ethic and you don't even know me. The evidence against the Deal's is right there in black and white and color pictures. People had said something about the way this woman smelled, we as a society are to worried about being politically correct and nothing was done. She smelled what more of a hint does someone need to know something was terribly wrong. Policy is to report to a supervisor and let it go. Now isn't that really helpful? See how well it served Sarah? She's smelled like that for a very long time, most people assumed it was due to the fact she was a breeder. She seems very sweet and does her job. So how was anyone going to know? Pull you heads out of the sand and quit trying to demonize me for having an opinion that doesn't agree with yours. Each to his own, I've always said, but the public does not seem to know where DMV hires from and this was a good opportunity to get the word out. I'm done with this topic and feel sorry for those of you that can't see the forest for the trees. Slam me all you want but I have a right to my opinions and there is such a thing as freedom of speech and also I do believe a freedom of information act.

Skipper and Wayne... what makes you think they had their first kid at age 14? The Statesman Journal stated they were 40, not 30. There is no excuse for this behavior! Even had they been young parents, they aren;t young now so don't make excuses for people that obviously are mentally ill to put their children in such dangers. I am sickened by the way people are attacking Ketazoje instead of addressing what the Deals did to those kids!
Skipper Osborne November 18, 2007 12:16 pm (Pacific time)
Wayne hit this sad story right on point when he said, "They had their first kid when they were both just 14? And stayed together...?" Unfortunately it was "children raising children." Hell, by them being together for "16 years," can any of us say that? I can not, I tried though. This young couple needs help, not incarceration, in irregardless of what they are doing they can teach the mojority of us lessons on how to stay together against all odds.
JB November 18, 2007 10:01 am (Pacific time)
Thanks to Ketazoje we all know where Sarah works but what is sad is no-body saw any red flags or any inkling there was even something a little odd about Sarah Deal. We tend to ignore what we don’t understand such as she wasn’t the best dresser nor the most popular or even odd. Not even you Ketazoje with all your “concerns” knew there was a problem there. We are not trained to look for off beat behaviors but we should have been looking with compassion to people who do have less than most even if they are odd. I’m not excusing what she did, it is deplorable and a judge will judge her but how did she hide her problems so well from everyone in a building and not one of us took the time to get to know her? With as much gossiping and whispering that goes on in a work place no-body saw anything? And if they did, they didn’t say anything about it except gossip “She is odd”. We did not know or see the shoes she walked in. Look at the pattern of people with physiological problems who held everyday jobs and too had cubical neighbors as well. Some of the most dangerous, serial offenders and scariest people in the world had full time jobs. Background checks never uncovered any of those scary people until they offended. Do we tend to ignore people cuz we don’t understand them or they are not the best dressed nor popular? Had we shown a little more teamwork, compassion or understanding as human beings towards her, would she have reached out to one of us for help if she wanted it…. We will never know. Ketazoje: As far as the public having a right to know Sarah works at DMV and your background checks theory is your option but your personal attacks on us as co-workers is also deplorable. You say people at work trust you and you’ve earned it, well from where I’m sitting I just don’t see that and I quote: “I know the type of people that work for DMV. Do you feel safe about giving DMV your social security number? Anyone that works there and has computer access can get your information, including these criminals”. What kind of comments are those? Where you looking for 15 seconds of fame or shame on the Internet, well you got it….
Ketazoje November 17, 2007 8:34 pm (Pacific time)
I thought long and hard before posting. I believe the public has a right to know. Nobody seemed to notice that I mentioned there are MANY HONEST and ETHICAL people that work for DMV. I am one of them, I do not disclose things I am not supposed to. People at work trust me because I've earned their trust. I've posted my comments at home on my own time. I may be a lot different from the person I am at work. I am much more opinionated, I speak my mind and mean what I say. We are bound by policy when it comes to voicing our opinion while on the job. I refuse to have my personal opinions silenced while not at work. I'm sorry many of you feel I threw you under the bus so to speak, that was not my intention. I will say again, I think the public has a right to know that background checks are not done on employees that access their personal information. My question is why it doesn't concern any of you more? My work ethic and the level of trust and access I have are proven. I've earned that level of respect and trust. That's the difference between someone that commits a crime and someone that doesn't have a record. These people don't even have to prove they can be trusted, they aren't monitored. DMV just relies on the fact that someone will see something strange and report it. Fine give the person a chance but monitor them, do spot checks or something. Don't just trust them blindly. We are getting off topic, these people are obviously very sick and need some kind of help, I don't really think jail will be the answer as much as major phsycho therapy of some sort would be more beneficial. I feel very sorry for the children, I just hope the conditions they've been living in have only been a more recent development and hasn't been life long. Can you imagine the damage to them if that's been the case all their lives? Everyone gets behind on housework, sometimes the woman of the house is the only one that bothers, she gets sick or hurt and can't do anything the rest of the family doesn't pitch in, and there ya go, chaos that is so overwhelming you can't do anything but ignore it. I dunno just a thought about the why and how this all came about.
asdf November 17, 2007 6:26 pm (Pacific time)
so far only one of the dogs have died- they elected to euthanize it due to its health. i find this whole situation very disturbing. i work with animals and just to think that they have been treated so poorly-- and so many of them. sadly-- in the veterinary field there isnt much you can do for animals that stink or are dirty if there is no obvious signs of neglect.
Neal Feldman November 17, 2007 12:50 pm (Pacific time)
Yes I was being facetious. And as for the dogs more than likely they will not be adopted out but instead euthanized. They likely have health and behavior issues (likely from the abuse/neglect) and will be deemed unsuitable for adopting out. Unpleasant and unfortunate but still true. I doubt any of the dogs were alive 12 hrs after they were collected up. Ah well...
what?? November 17, 2007 11:32 am (Pacific time)
What on earth is wrong with people like this?!?!?! I mean this is one of the most disturbing and scary stories ive read in a long time. I would be interested in knowing what kind of mental and/or other issues could cause this sickening lifestyle and behavior. Wow, humans never fail to get sicker and sicker it seems..
jlk November 17, 2007 10:28 am (Pacific time)
hey Ketazoje ya know, kids are involved in this. and your comments could hurt them with their peers. did you ever think of that?
unknown November 17, 2007 10:01 am (Pacific time)
wow Ketazoje you should be ashamed of your self!! how can you blasmy your co-workers. not just Sarah Deal, but the many people who are the ethical ones working for DMV. you just smashed everyone, including your self at DMV. the media did not mention where she works. whether they knew or not, there was a good reason for them not mentioning it. you made an unwise decision here!! Sarah and her husband will do their time for what they did. the puppies will be from here on out safe and adopted to wonderful people. the children are now safe and away from all this filth.
Anonymous November 17, 2007 6:57 am (Pacific time)
Ok, I’m just as concerned there are people out there like this too and some could even be my neighbors or co-workers with dirty living conditions or even dangerous but what concerns me more is; I too work for DMV and obviously there was no background check done on this “Ketazoje” person’s procedural skills, loyalty or work ethics. DMV strives hard in trying to gain and keep the publics trust without people like “Ketazoje” feeding the public more ammo to shoot us with. “Ketazoje” is willing to publicly post and I quote: “Sarah Deal works for DMV, Wayne, I know because I work there too. They actually came to her desk and arrested her in front of everyone. I know the type of people that work for DMV. These are the type of people that process personal information. Do you feel safe about giving DMV your social security number? Anyone that works there and has computer access can get your information, including these criminals. If you ever want to see if someone is a state employee go to the oregon.gov website, find the employee search engine and you can find any of us if you have our first and last name”. Wow! With you “Ketazoje” having just as much access to personal information as Sarah Deal and willing to throw us all under the bus on the internet, does that not make you just as dangerous with confidentional information or a social security number as Sarah Deal, the very thing you say you are concerned about Ketazoje?
GuitarTseZen November 16, 2007 10:28 pm (Pacific time)
Ketazoje, you shouldn't be giving out information on how to search for people in the state, of course they shouldn't have employees names and emails available for the public.. Additionally, a background check may not have uncovered anything.. Its obvious that they have been living in filth for a long time. There seems to have been no government involvement up until now. I would encourage you to be less judgmental of those with "backgrounds" if they are working for the state from 7am to 3:30pm monday thru friday, then it seems fairly obvious that they are trying to do better for themselves. Occasionally one or two unfortunate individuals make it through. Judgments are a pretty serious thing, please be care how you use it.. Like I tell my children, when you point at someone's fault, you have three more pointing back at you.. I am not condoning there mistreatment of the children and the animals, its the generalization that everyone with a past are subject to scrutiny and are not worthy of any level of trust.. Anyway, that is my $0.02..
cerce November 16, 2007 9:33 pm (Pacific time)
The other 2 children are foster children. Yes its sick. Think of how those of us who have dogs from or with her feel.
Anonymous November 16, 2007 8:49 pm (Pacific time)
who are these other two children 9 and 17? has anybody heard?
Ketazoje November 16, 2007 5:14 pm (Pacific time)
Wayne, I know because I work there too. They actually came to her desk and arrested her in front of everyone. I know the type of people that work for DMV, there are many that are honest and ethical as am I. Which is why I get so frustrated that DMV does not do a background check before they hire you. I work in a secure building, nobody without access can get in, however they hire people like this and many others. If you ever want to see if someone is a state employee all you have to do is go to the oregon.gov website and find the employee search engine and you can find any of us if you have our first and last name.

Deb...I think he (Neal) was being facetious. I can't imagine any truly self-respecting person to be involved in any of the above!
wayne November 16, 2007 10:35 am (Pacific time)
They had their first kid when they were both just 14? And stayed together? Katazoje, how do you know that she works for the DMV, just curious. I'm trying to find more information on these people.
Deb November 16, 2007 8:15 am (Pacific time)
To Neal Feldman, who said, "What kind of selfrespecting child porn perv..." How in the world can a child port perv have self-respect? It can't be possible!
Neal Feldman November 15, 2007 10:44 pm (Pacific time)
What kind of selfrespecting child porn perv would live like that? What were the dogs in the freezer for? Doggie Helper friday night? Ah well...
Ketazoje November 15, 2007 10:19 pm (Pacific time)
Sarah Deal works for DMV, these are type of people that process personal information. Not to mention that inmates at Coffee Creek answer phones for DMV as well. Do you feel safe about giving DMV your social security number? Anyone that works there and has computer access can get your information, including these criminals.
