YWCA Salem Discover Pink Celebrates This Year’s Walk

(SALEM, Oregon) - The YWCA Salem Women’s Health Program celebrated the accomplishments of everyone who participated in the 6th Annual Discover Pink Walk during a “Thank You” party held on Saturday. “Based on this year’s donations and team contributions, we are pleased to announce $32, 911 was raised during this year’s walk,” said Women’s Health Program Director, Karla Iverson. Ms. Iverson also calculated that those donations would equate to 263 breast cancer screenings for local women in our area.

Teams were acknowledged during the hour long celebration held at the Green Room at the YWCA Salem.

Special recognition was given to the having the most members and raising the most funds per member. They included Team Margaret, Truitt Brothers, Salem Rotary, and the Broadway Babes.

In addition, there were numerous community partners who assisted with the corporate sponsorship of in-kind and funding. YWCA Salem is located at 1255 Broadway Street NE Ste #110 and has conducted the Discover Pink Walk for the past six years. For the past two years, the event has been a walk through downtown Salem. The Discover Pink Walk is the annual fundraiser for the YWCA Salem Women’s Health Program. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2006, about 9,710 cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and about 3,700 women will die from the disease. According to the Oregon State Cancer Registry, there is an average of 11 cases of cervical cancer and 4 deaths in Marion County each year.
