(TEMPE, Arizona) - The No. 20 University of Oregon volleyball team (17-8, 5-8) ended a five-match losing streak Saturday night with a 3-2 win at Arizona State (10-15, 4-8). Facing its first unranked opponent in three weeks, UO jumped ahead with 25-20 and 25-12 wins the first sets. ASU answered with 25-21 and 25-16 decisions in the third and fourth sets, before Oregon answered with a deciding 15-12 fifth-set outcome. Senior outside hitter Heather Meyers posted her second +20-kill effort of the season with her 24 kills – one off her career high – and hit +.300 (.370) for the 12th time this campaign. Meyers’ team-high two aces Saturday gave her 168 career-wise and still ranked her third all-time in Pac-10 history - three shy of second all-time on the Pac-10 career list behind former two-time national player of the year Logan Tom of Stanford (171). Following her lead, sophomore outside hitter Katherine Fischer posted a career-high 24 kills and hit .297. Her 13 digs rounded out her 11th double-double of the season – fourth-most in the Pac-10 this season. Freshman setter Lauren Plum registered a career high 65 assists – third-most in the Pac-10 this season - and added 10 digs for her sixth career double-double. Among other noteworthy Duck stats, redshirt sophomore outside hitter Alaina Bergsma added 14 kills and hit .256; sophomore outside hitter Jocelyn Levig paced the team in blocks (5) for the 11th time this season; and sophomore libero Haley Jacob’s 23 digs led the team for the 21st time this campaign and was one off her career high. En route to her team’s sixth straight win over ASU, Oregon finished with a season-high 75 kills, and its third-highest hitting mark in league play (.289). In the team comparisons, the two squads tied in aces (4-4), Oregon sported edges in digs (72-69) and assists (69-58), and ASU held advantages in hitting (.310-.289) and blocks (12-6). In the first set, ASU jumped out to a 6-2 lead, before UO quickly rallied to tie it 7-7 on a Fischer kill. UO quick jumped ahead 13-9, then took a 20-14 lead on a pair of ASU attack errors, en route to a 25-20 decision. In the second set, after a 2-2 tie, UO never trailed and surged ahead to 10-5 and 19-9 leads, en route to a 25-12 decision – and tied its fewest points allowed that it initially allowed to OSU in its second set from its 3-0 sweep last month. In the third set, neither team led by more than three points until ASU ended the set with three straight points on a block and pair of kills for a 25-21 win. ASU never trailed in the fourth set and led by at least by four points after it took a 12-8 lead. The Sun Devils staked their largest lead of the set – nine points – at 22-13 on a Sun Devil block, and ended the set with a 25-16 victory. Oregon jumped out to 3-0 and 6-3 leads in the fifth set, before ASU tied the match, 11-11. Oregon responded with a 4-1 run to end the match thanks to two kills by Meyers, an ASU attack error and a Fischer kill on match point in the 15-12 decider. For ASU, senior outside hitter Sarah Reaves logged her 11th double-double of the season (15 kills, 18 digs), and the returning All-Pac-10 honorable mention hit .311. Other Sun Devil category leaders included Erica Wilson (.409, 5 blocks, 1 ace) and Sarah Johnson (20 digs). In other action around the league Saturday night, No. 2 Cal won 3-2 at home over No. 10 UCLA, and No. 23 Arizona won 3-1 at home over Oregon State. Looking ahead, UO heads to Corvallis for its Civil War rematch at Oregon State next Friday, November 12 at 7 p.m. The match will be televised tape delay by Fox Sports Net, and rebroadcast times will be announced later next week.
