(KELSO, Wash.) - A 66 year old Rose Valley man was arrested without incident after a lengthy stand-off in which the suspect fired dozens of rounds in and around his residence, and at a SWAT vehicle. At approximately 2PM, a female called to say that her roommate,Charlie W. Dodd who lives in the 5800 block of Rose Valley Road, was intoxicated, had a gun and was shooting in the house. Deputies responded and cordoned off the rural 5th wheel residence and a few out buildings. Deputies could hear multiple shots being fired from within and around the residence and a call was made to Lower Columbia SWAT. SWAT units arrived and attempts to negotiate were started. After telephone negotiations failed and the suspect wouldn't answer anyone from outside the residence, SWAT introduced gas into the residence. After nearly four hours of waiting and intermittent negotiations with deputies and 911 dispatchers, the subject exited the residence and was taken into custody. It is believed that the subject fired a couple of dozen rounds from a handgun, with one volley fired at the SWAT vehicle. It was reported that he had access to numerous other weapons as well. No one was injured in the incident. "I am incredibly proud of my deputies and our SWAT personnel. They all showed great professionalism and restraint in dealing with this upset and intoxicated man." said Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson. "This could have easily had a very different outcome." "We have great people and excellent training; from SWAT to our dispatchers who continued to engage the suspect in conversation by telephone." Nelson said. "I couldn't be more proud of them." Nelson said. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate; while the suspect was booked in the Cowlitz County Jail in lieu of $250,000.00 for 3 counts of 1st degree assault and resisting arrest.
