5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Northern California

About 30 seconds ago, the ground in Northern California began to shake.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) - The ground in Sacramento began shaking about 90 seconds ago, it is continuing. I don't think it is the wind. From my perspective, it was very very noticeable.

I fear to think it may have been worse elsewhere. Nothing fell from the shelves, but it was a very distinct, continued feeling.

The U.S. Geologic Survey States alternately that the quake was 5.7 and 5.9 11km WNW of Greenville, California.

Magnitude: 5.7 Time (Local): 05/23/2013 20:47:07 Time (UTC): 05/24/2013 03:47:07 Depth (km): 0 12 mile(s) SE of Chester, CA

  4. 67km (42mi) NE of Paradise, California
  5. 159km (99mi) NW of Carson City, Nevada

Contra Costa Times writer Katie Nelson had more information, she caught up with Rafael Abreau, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Center. He said the earthquake was centered six miles west northwest of Greenville, and 26 miles southwest of Susanville.

The quake was felt in nearby Sacramento and as far south as Lodi, Stockton and even Oakley. The USGS reported a 3.5 magnitude aftershock struck around 8:55 p.m. and a 2.6 magnitude aftershock at 9:07 p.m.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Plumas, Butte or Placer counties, according to a tweet from the California Department of Emergency Management.

Jacquelyn Higgins of Antioch tweeted, "Felt it in Antioch."

There have been eight aftershocks ranging from 2.6-to-3.5-magnitude.

It is an interesting thing to experience. Having grown up in Los Angeles, I was there for two major earthquakes, but slept through both as a child! This is certainly the most distinct quake I have ever felt, and it is akin to a rocket attack I recall in Iraq, in that you don't have any control over what is going to happen whatsoever. Of course this region is close to the infamous San Andreas Fault. I will add more information as it becomes available.

At the center of all of this, Tim pays extremely close attention to the safety and welfare of journalists worldwide.

It was a manmade tremor as Michelle Obama was doing some jumping-jacks. Bless her heart.

Woodland, and we felt some of it. It wasn't too bad, it was just startling.

In Sacramento, and I felt it too. My chair felt like somebody was tugging on it and the wires hanging from the ceiling were moving back and forth.
