(SALEM) - The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce`s Leadership Youth group is working to build bridges between youth and community. On Wednesday, May 24th, the Leadership Youth group will dedicate a day of volunteer service to Family Building Blocks.

Family Building Blocks is a child abuse prevention program serving young children and their families in Marion and Polk counties. Their mission is to keep children safe and families together. A group of up to 25 youths will spend the day volunteering at both Family Building Blocks and their consignment store, Reruns for Kids.

These volunteer efforts will be spent on cleaning, organizing and landscaping at both facilities.

`The efforts of the Leadership Youth volunteers will have a positive impact on the families we serve," said Sue Miller, executive director of Family Building Blocks. `Our facility helps us provide a nurturing environment for the children attending our therapeutic classes. Keeping our building and grounds in excellent condition is a gift to the children, our volunteers, staff and the community."

The Leadership Youth`s mission is to cultivate and nurture the hidden leadership qualities that exist in all youth within the Salem-Keizer communities and to build bridges between youth and community.

`Leadership Youth`s community service day ends up being one of their favorite days because the kids can put what they have learned all year into action. You cannot believe the change we see in these kids in only the first year of the program," explained Gladys Blum, Leadership Youth Co-Director.
