Chrysler Plans to Close Almost 800 Dealerships

(NEW YORK) - Chrysler LLC has announced that it plans to eliminate around a quarter of its 3,200 U.S. dealerships by early next month. The company cites a bankruptcy court filing Thursday that the network is antiquated and has too many stores competing with each other.

Chrysler filed a motion with the U.S. bankruptcy Court in New York announcing its plans to eliminate 789 dealerships by June 9th.

The company that revived the "gas hog" in recent years in the form of oversize cars and trucks, states that many of the dealers' sales are too low. Chrysler's timing with its new high consumption vehicles came just ahead of the most recent gas crunch.

They report that a little over have their dealerships in the United States account for roughly 90 percent of company sales.

Dealers were told Thursday morning through United Parcel Service letters if they would remain or be eliminated, MSNBC reports. It was also announced that dealers on the hit list can appeal.

Chrysler has been the recipient of $4 billion in federal loans. The company has been operating in bankruptcy protection since April 30th 2009.

Chrysler sales this year dipped down 46 percent, when compared with the first four months of last year. That adds up Chrysler reports, to a $16.8 billion net loss for 2008.
