EXCLUSIVE Interview with 'Sandman' - Member of the Free Syrian Army

Sandman and the Free Syrian Army, or FSA, say these civilians were killed by Assad's forces, but it is hard to be sure about anything in this terrrible, violent war.

(SACRAMENTO / DAMASCUS) - If there is one thing I learned from this conversation with a jihadist, (Mujahidin) who goes by the name of 'Sandman' - it is that the whole Islamic world may be fragmented beyond repair. Our perceptions in the west are generally far from reality because Muslim on Muslim conflicts are complicated. Sadly, inner-strife tends to dominate elements of this faith, and sets a premise for what could some day be the ultimate downfall of a religion with widely contrasting interpretations, to say the least.

Pardon the blunt tone, but military action that the U.S. government and its minions in the press widely support, strikes me as a subject worthy of great caution, therefore I am hesitant to see the FSA as anything but problematic since the nightly news practically roots for them.

I've been corresponding with Sandman for about five years, on and off. Our contact began when I was covering the war in Iraq. He basically thought I was part of the U.S. war machine, working as a propaganda mouthpiece for Uncle Sam. While I covered Americans in the wars overseas in a positive light, I also have reported critically to no end. After Sandman realized that Salem-News.com actually was fair and realistic in covering the Middle east, we began corresponding in more civilized terms. As I explained to Sandman, we have looked at the conflict in Syria from both sides, this is the only interview I have personally conducted with a member of the FSA.

I explained to Sandman that I believe people on both (all) sides are committing atrocities, and that I don't understand how toppling another government accomplishes anything. I have friends associated with Hezbollah and Assad, I have a friend from a Christian family inside Damascus; they are terrified of the FSA because they are violent foreigners with little regard for anyone who disagrees or fails to support them.

Tim King: Sandman, you and I have been writing back and forth for a few years, you first wrote to me to tell me that I was wrong for covering the Iraq war from the perspective of the Americans. Then over time you realized that Salem-News gives the Palestinians a voice, and you learned that we aren't half bad. Right now you are telling me you are with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) inside of Syria and you are very concerned that the Sunni population is being victimized?

Sandman: Yes this is not a war between soldiers and soldiers this is a war against Islam and Muslims. You have to understand Iran is not a Muslim state. The Shia movement is an invention to destroy Islam from within. Sandman: Look up the name "Maher Arar" and read up how this defender of Palestinians and Muslims sent "Arar" to a 5 star accommodation concrete closet measuring 6' X 7' with no lighting, no bedding, no windowns, naked for a period of 10 months. The only time he was taken out of his cell is to be tortured. This was done at the behest of the Gods that he's taken besides Allah the United States and the Zionist state back in 2002 in a rendition style operation when Mr Maher Arar, a Syrian Canadian national was travelling back to Canada and transited in the U.S. The charge was terrorism.
