(SALEM) - Salem Police responded to a Hit & Run accident on Mission Street Sunday evening, where a tow truck driver who was loading a vehicle to be towed was struck by a passing vehicle, which then fled the area. The driver for "Affordable Towing", was wearing his orange safety vest and had the tow trucks flashers and emergency lights activated when the accident occurred. The tow truck driver was facing the tow truck operating the lift controls when he was struck on his right side. The driver was knocked down, but able to get out of the roadway. At the time of the accident, the tow truck was in the far right, eastbound lane of Mission St.SE, approx. 200 feet west of Hawthorne Ave.SE. The vehicle which struck the tow truck driver did not stop, but instead accelerated away from the accident scene. Medics responded and transported the tow truck driver to Salem Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The vehicle which fled is possibly a dark colored sedan. The vehicle's right side passenger mirror broke off when it struck the tow truck driver and was recovered at the accident scene. It is believed that the vehicle likely sustained scrapes/scratches and possibly body damage to the right passenger side from the impact. This investigation is continuing. Anyone with information concerning this accident, the vehicle which fled, or vehicle driver are asked to call Salem Police at 503-588-6123. Additionally, a $1000 reward has been offered by the owner of Affordable Towing. "I'm offering a Thousand dollar reward for the person that hit my driver," Jack Conwell said. "The move over law applies to tow trucks too, not just red and blue lights." The "move over" law which went into effect in 2008 says that ALL vehicles must move over if possible to another available lane (or slow down if you can't move over or if the move would be unsafe) when approaching the rear of an Emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle that has it's amber, red or blue flashers activated. The fine for not moving over is $287. The lifetime decision for not moving over and causing this kind of accident is priceless. BE AWARE.
