(MIAMI AP) - Immigrants say they want to honor their new country in their native language.

Their critics say singing the U-S national anthem in Spanish is an insult.

The track "Nuestro Himno" (NWAY'-stroh EEM'-noh) is out today, featuring artists including Wyclef Jean (zhahn), hip-hop's Pitbull and Puerto Rican singers Carlos Ponce and Olga Tanon.

The head of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies -- which supports tougher measures against immigrants -- asks if France would accept its anthem sung in English "as a sign of French patriotism." He says, "Of course not."

A British music producer says he came up with the idea to honor millions of immigrants seeking a better life in America. He says the song's "intent is to communicate."

The record label is urging Hispanic stations across the country to play the track at seven tonight, Eastern time.

Theodore Roosevelt 1907. Amen to our founding fore fathers 99 years later. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907

For reasons completely unrelated to the immigration debate, I don't think it is ever appropriate to change a national anthem and expect that nation's citizens to accept it. USA or otherwise.
