(SALEM) - State Police say a two-year old girl from Tangent who was walking with her mother and grandmother was injured after a chained Rotweiller suddenly attacked her, causing a non-life threatening chest injury. OSP troopers are investigating the incident that occurred Saturday morning around 9:30 AM on State Fairgrounds property. At about 9:30 AM, Susie Blatchford, her mother and her two-year old daughter were visiting an agriculture festival that is being held at the State Fairgrounds this weekend. As the three moved through the parking lot and walked past a parked van, they say a large male Rotweiller chained to the van suddenly charged and reportedly attacked the child biting her in the chest area. Susie Blatchford told investigating troopers that she grabbed the chain and pulled the dog off her daughter. Salem Fire Department personnel responded to treat the child before she was initially transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital. She has reportedly been transferred to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland where she is in stable condition. Police say the 5-year old, approximately 85-pound male Rotweiller had been left chained to the van and unattended by its owner, 28-year old James Wilson of Mosier. The chain length was estimated to be 10 - 15 feet. Wilson was a vendor at the festival. The dog was transported to Willamette Humane Society in Salem where it is to remain for observation. Oregon State Police Trooper Mark Davie is the lead investigator. The Marion County District Attorney's Office has been apprised and requested the reports be forwarded to their office for review pending consideration of any possible criminal charges against Wilson.
