See Raw Footage of Oregon Soldiers From the War in Afghanistan

See what a day is like for an Army infantry soldier who has his "boots on the ground" in an Afghan war zone.

(SALEM) - As I covered the war in Afghanistan during the winter of 2006/07 I knew I would want to do more with the footage than just the reports I was sending back to Salem-News.com and Oregon's KPTV FOX-12.

I was disappointed that both CNN and the FOX News Channel expressed only minor interest and in the end, aired none of the material.

FOX-12 ran 24 reports that I sent from Afghanistan and two documentaries have aired in recent weeks since my return to the states. One program featured only my work and the other featured a number of reports from other members of the FOX-12 News team and they did a nice job with both programs.

I have been inclined to post sections of raw footage but because it is a war and the language and environment isn't exactly suitable for all audiences, I have hesitated. But I knew I would develop a way because the footage is fairly amazing; you will see what Afghanistan is like up close and personal.

Because Salem-News.com is family friendly in terms of language and content, I decided to post the footage on myspace.com and the footage is already building a new flow of visitors to our site.

Tim in Afghanistan

The first batch of footage is available to watch in five-minute segments from beginning to end. This is unedited footage from an infantry security patrol "outside the wire" in Kabul, Afghanistan near Camp Phoenix. The soldiers are mostly Oregon National Guard and it is a rare and unusual chance to witness a military operation in Afghanistan from beginning to end.

My favorite part of the footage is the children of Afghanistan, and you will see hundreds of them. Most are pictures of people having some degree of success in their lives, but other images aren't. While I was in country I saw babies with no shoes on in freezing snow, I met people whose families were murdered, I saw poverty so bad that Americans stationed there call it "fourth world."

I witnessed a nation ravaged by thirty years of war where one out of five kids won't make it to age five.

A place where men value their weapons more highly than their women.

That's pretty amazing, I felt like I was right there with you. Thanks Tim for the effort and sacrifice.

is it true that those CNN news people can't swear? No wonder they were not comfortable airing the real thing!?

Albert, I think it is a combination of all of those things and it is too bad. While I endeavored to produce the lighter side of things over there, the networks seem uninterested in any war coverage from Afghanistan.

I know you remember the days of the Vietnam War when combat and war footage was the norm. They seem to have concluded that most honest pictures get a government into trouble.

Had the big networks shown interest, I would have supplied daily stories or even just video clips for them and I would have been reasonable in cost, it doesn't seem like a bad idea considering how pitifully little coverage of Afghanistan is on the air.

CNN in particular didn't think I would be able to get the video back, as there are few satellites there. But I think you might recall that all stories were sent back to Salem-News and Channel-12 in Portland via FTP and it worked perfectly. I tried to explain that to them to no avail.

I hope that explains my point a little better, thanks for your thoughts Albert!

One more thing for now. I want to see the good, bad and the ugly. I only care to see news that is not sanitized horse-shot. Most people like your coverage and I do not understand. Must be money, power or maybe as I said before you may be a threat to the powers of pabulum that be.

Albert Marnell March 27, 2007 8:44 pm (Pacific time)

Your coverage must be an educational or consciousness raising threat if what you are saying is that it was not approved by our controlled mass media to a greater extent; or in plain English, they are too damn cheap to compensate you for your hard work and professional coverage. I know you do not give up. I hope I read your message correctly. You never expected that your pearls would be down played by swine. Maybe it is just a ratings issue. Most people are only interested in junk like "American Idol". You tell me, clarify if you so desire....maybe I missed something. If it is any consolation, many people benefited from your reports. I wish you could tell us both sides of everthing.....nothing is all good and nothing is all bad. I am interested in how much you got to learn about the pipline that is going through Afghanistan....for energy.
