(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - On Saturday, more than 5,100 volunteers turned out to participate in the 22nd Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup. The entire Oregon coastline, 362 miles, was cleaned of debris that had accumulated during the stormy winter months. Volunteers removed an estimated 54 tons of trash from Oregon's coastline. Many interesting items turned up in the volunteers’ SOLV bags, including a shopping cart, a washing machine, a refrigerator, a water heater, a pocket knife, a car seat, a Ford Bronco, more than 60 tires, and thousands of plastic bottles. Jack McGowan, SOLV's Executive Director, commented, "Once again, our citizens have demonstrated their pride in this great state by turning out to preserve and enhance Oregon's beaches. We extend our special thanks to our partners, Oregon Parks and Recreation Dept., and the local garbage haulers all along the coast who help make this event possible." At the heart of SOLV’s mission are its volunteers - Oregonians who have learned that "when people get together, things get done." Founded in 1969 by Oregon Governor Tom McCall to address litter and vandalism problems, SOLV's mission has expanded to reach every county in the state and to bring together government agencies, businesses and individuals in programs and projects to enhance the livability of Oregon. Because of this expansion SOLV no longer calls itself "Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism" and has adopted the acronym, SOLV, as its official name.
