(SALEM) - Unregistered boat owners beware, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies are out walking the docks at marinas, looking for boats that have expired registration decals.

Clackamas County Sherriff`s Deputy Doug Olson says boat owners he comes into contact with are unaware that if their boat is moored at a marina, it still needs to have current registration decals.

Failure to have a current certificate of number or registration can result in a fine of up to $273. Oregon`s boat registration fee is a flat $3 per foot and applies to all sailboats 12 feet and longer, all motorized boats including recreational boats and personal watercraft, canoes, inflatables, and rowboats with any type of motor.

Exceptions include certain public boats, foreign boats, and boats registered in other states using Oregon waters for 60 days or less.

For more information, contact the Oregon State Marine Board or Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Reports from Salem-News.com's Kevin Hays can also be heard throughout Oregon on Newsradio 1190 KEX.
