(SALEM) - Oregon State Police say nobody was hurt today when an unknown substance was discovered in a letter on the first floor at the Oregon Veteran's Building in Salem. The call came in at 11:20 AM. OSP's Greg Hastings says the powder will be analyzed, and "turned over to the FBI for further testing." He says no state employees were exposed and there was no evacuation to the building. It began when an employee of the Veteran's Affairs Department at 700 Summer Street, opened an envelope containing a letter and an unknown powder substance contained in a plastic baggie, according to Hastings. Oregon State Police and Salem Fire Department Hazardous Materials personnel responded to the scene. The section of the first floor where the powder was found was isolated while the incident was initially investigated. "The powder substance will be turned over to the FBI for further testing. Oregon State Police and FBI will be conducting further investigation." Hastings says no information regarding the contents of the letter will be released.
