Mar-21-2008 20:29TweetFollow @OregonNews Barack Obama Visits Oregon Cities (VIDEO)Tim King Salem-News.comObama's Oregon visit concluded just recently with his visit to Eugene where the "Stand For Change" Rally was held at the University of Oregon.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Barack Obama came to Oregon today, with stops in Eugene, Salem and Portland. His highly anticipated visit seemed to go off without a hitch and it featured a bonus in Portland in the form of a personal endorsement from Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico. "Whether it was as a congressman or cabinet secretary, ambassador or governor, there are few more distinguished public servants in America than Governor Richardson, and I am deeply honored to have his support," Senator Obama said. Over the course of a distinguished career as legislator, cabinet secretary, and diplomat, Richardson developed a deep understanding of America’s role in the world. Richardson served seven terms in Congress before being appointed by President Clinton to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations and, later, Secretary of Energy. Obama made this statement about Richardson, "He knows that to secure American interests, we have to talk to our enemies, as well as our friends, which is why he stood up to North Korea and Saddam Hussein to secure the release of American hostages. And that’s the kind of tough, aggressive diplomacy we need to meet the new challenges of the 21st century." Barack Obama's Portland "Stand for Change" Rally was held at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland at 7:30 AM. The Obama Campaign's Salem "Stand for Change" Town Hall was held at the Salem Armory Auditorium. The doors opened at 11:00 AM and Senator Obama took the stage shortly after his scheduled 1:00 PM appearance. WillametteLive.com reports that the Salem event went well. Tickets for the event went quickly for the thousand or so in attendance, underscoring Obama's popularity in this largely Democratic state. WillametteLive says Obama did have a difficult time trying to pronounce Earl Blumenauer's name after the Congressman gave him a lively introduction. But once he got past the name part, Obama praised him, "saying that he is a man who should be put in charge of something. He then launched into the speech part of his presentation. He began by addressing the question of why he is running for president now, rather than later in life. He quoted Martin Luther King Jr. and said that he has been running for the past 15 months because of the 'fierce urgency of now.'" WillametteLive.com reported. They say the most memorable question may have been a woman asking what sets Obama's agenda apart from Senator Clinton's. "He acknowledged that on many domestic issues their stances are similar, but he pointed out that she is caught up in politics and Washington's 'conventional thinking.'" Obama's Oregon visit concluded just recently with his visit to Eugene where the "Stand For Change" Rally was held at the University of Oregon. LaJ: Agree with your sharp judgment and good intent here, but often resume or similar does NOT tell full story. With distortion/perversion and spin so frequent a tool for so many politically malign these days, one must exercise much more care to get "big picture" --which is why S-N open, honest, democratic dialog can be helpful, via sharing process since some find components others may have missed. Hang in there and keep on digging, with open mind for changes demanded, sometimes, as in first distorted response to Obama racial-issue speech, now seen as classic, courageous and continuing-impact move.

We cannot pick our race or our relatives, but we can pick those people we decide to associate ourselves with, and we should be held accountable for those relationships that impact our behavior and decision-making, and ultimately our judgement. That is why it is so important to have a complete resume on all candidates, regardless of the office they seek.

"Anon": For documentation of mine, Id self to editor for direct contact, including full proof it was NOT "liberals" allowing both impacts on Mexico and the slack control of our borders. Who do you suppose profits most by illegal-worker flow into this country ? NOT us common folk, you will agree...
Henry Ruark March 23, 2008 12:31 pm (Pacific time)
"Anon" et al: Main problem for you is to conquer own feelings enough to fact facts. Fact One: ANY effort to remove 12-15 million, family and children et al, bound to demand force and fury and many dollars. Who pays ? States do not have funds, U.S. not about to supply. Fact Two: Much of any such effort will force legal tests of Constitutional provisions, costly, delaying and deep in problems and ethical issues. Fact Three: Worldwide costs to U.S.in acceptance and prestige huge, after century of promotion and promise, with great profit and strength from many other somewhat similar flows --as for Irish workers who built railroads and much else. We DO have a problem, but it demands serious study and full Congressional action, not any futile attack for mass deportation. See my several previous Op Eds for full documented detail via STAFF-"Written by HCR". Your feelings here truly appreciated but suggest you seek further solid information and reconsider. Take into account, too, the tremendous toll U.S. corporations took via invasion of Mexican economy and their politics, historically dollar driven and forcing millions into what amounts to slave labor there.

Obama sure did a good job with the immigration. Got to get the votes from somewhere. Amnesty, that's the big thing for him. Just another Politician who needs the Illegal Votes. What happened to common sense? It's not expensive to deport all these illegals. Self-deport, the cheapest and easiest way. Cut off all the funding, no more schooling, no more welfare checks, no more apartments/houses, no more jobs and they will leave forever. I'm tired of being compassionate to people who sneak in to this Country, steal from the American people, steal our children's future, steal our SSnumbers, steal our job. Wake up Oregon, they are going to bankrup Oregon and the US. Our Men and Women of the Armed Forces fighting for our Freedom and here the illegals get better care than our brave soldiers and vets. Shame on you, State of Oregon, US Government for selling out this Country. Shame on you all your liberals. Think about your children. I'm tired of pushing 1 for English, I'm tired of walking through Salem and hear nothing but Spanish. I'm tired of these Criminals demanding things they won't deserve. God help us. I'm sure some of you call me a racist. That's too bad because I'm not. I don't care from where you from as long as you did it legally. I have no mercy for people who brake the law.

"His highly anticipated visit seemed to go off without a hitch." Yes, if going off without a hitch means the biggest news out of the visit is your aide calling Bill Clinton Joseph McCarthy for daring to call his own wife patriotic. Enjoying this trainwreck of a campaign though.

Wassup Oregon? Obama supporter from New Zealand here, just dropping by to say hey! BTW, I've been looking at pictures of Oregon on the net and you guys have got a seriously beautiful state. Reminds me of New Zealand in a lot of ways. Also would like to ask what is the Dan Reed Network up to these days? They kicked it back in the 1990's, after the Gulf War with 'Mix it Up' - might be time for them to write a song for Obama?

LaJean, Sue et al' Comments from both you make me proud of this channel, and reflect the kind of cogitation it takes to really restore our democracy. Surely hope some solid old-style journalist will do what LaJ. seeks, and if I can find any-such will bring it to you here in toto or summary as possible. Sue, I like yours re "real deal" and must say that's my impression, too, solidly now reinforced by facts coming out as to from whence-and-why the video re the pastor's remarks was initiated. But Obama's response surely should go far towards reflecting what we see in him, too. Thank you both for feeling you could share here with the rest of us,and make sure to continue participation. As I often say age 90, and it sure as h... applies here, "We need allahelpwecanget !"

I was at the Eugene rally last night. We got in line about 5:30. We were one of the last 100 or so to get and the line was just as long as when we started. I would estimate that just as many got as turned away. It was worth the drive, the long wait in line and lack of sleep. I would think there was a lot of interest since we still have 2 months almost to election. And for those of you who believe he just has a speech and no substance, I would say there was a lot of substance in his speech. If he becomes our President, he will serve us instead of expecting us to serve him. He is the real deal. Now we can squabble about the numbers in attendance or we can debate what he has to offer. For the first time since Reagan took office, I have hope for my country.
LaJean March 22, 2008 11:20 am (Pacific time)
I am not your typical black person, nor your typical African-American female, but many like me are trying to sort through the hype and opinion and make a rational decision. We're starving for unbiased, factual information regarding the two leading democratic candidates actual track records. It would be an excellent journalistic exercise to see a synopsis/timeline of both Obama's and Clinton's public service, including vital elements such as years in elected office, legislation authored, innovative programs executed, attendance and voting records. I'm weary and wary over arguments over charisma, race and gender. I want to see actual past achievements because I do believe past effectiveness greatly informs us about future ability to govern successfully.

Tom et al: Crowd-count comes much more difficult when "one-man-band" coverage with camera and light is the job. I still remember crick-in-neck when only toting Speed Graphic ! Understand your concern, and note three separate estimates in other sources, including 3,500 in one. Where ELSE did we get video and continuing sharp coverage on these key electoral events in Oregon ?
Tom Bergeron March 22, 2008 1:36 am (Pacific time)
"the thousand or so in attendance"? Someone buy this reporter a calculator. I counted about 2500 in attendace.
