(SALEM) - The Turner Fire District will soon have new fitness equipment for department firefighters and policemen, thanks to a $1,000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation. The gym is part of a fitness initiative aimed at increasing department productivity at emergency scenes, reducing the likelihood of injuries on the job and improving emergency response time. "Safety is our number one priority at Weyerhaeuser," said John Falk, general manager for Weyerhaeuser`s Salem SpaceKraft facility. "We`re proud to support the men and women dedicating themselves to keeping our community safe. This gift is a way to champion health and safety while also stepping up to be a good corporate citizen." A committee of local Weyerhaeuser employees recommended the grant. Weyerhaeuser employs 35 people at the SpaceKraft facility in Salem. SpaceKraft is the world`s leading producer of liquid bulk packaging containers, serving customers across the western United States, and the Pacific Rim, as well as South America, Australia and Latin America. The mission of the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation is to improve the quality of life in communities where Weyerhaeuser has a presence. Since 1948, the Foundation has directed more than $183 million to local communities. Nationwide, the Foundation's annual philanthropic budget totals $10 million. Last year, the Foundation donated more than $1.1 million to Oregon non-profit agencies and schools.
