(SALEM) - Last year in Marion County, there were 18 cases of active tuberculosis (TB). Not all of them were contagious. Tuberculosis can occur in literally any part of the body. TB occurs most frequently in the lungs, and if it occurs in the lungs or throat, it can be contagious. Contagious TB is a public health concern and a community concern as well. Recognize the signs and symptoms of TB, which include fever, chills, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and breathing problems. Those who work in a high-risk area, have a disease that compromises the immune system, have been exposed to a confirmed active case, are homeless, are a substance abuser, or have been in a country with high TB occurrence for six months or more should be tested. Testing is simple and can provide valuable health information. Check with a healthcare provider about the signs and symptoms of TB and being tested. The goal of World TB Day on March 24th is to mobilize support for the fight against tuberculosis. Education is a powerful tool to fight this curable disease. Get information. Advocate for education and funding for treatment. Support local health departments as they work to test, treat and eradicate TB. Above all, ask questions. To learn more, checkout the Web sites at www.stoptb.org and www.cdc.gov. Information is also available from the Marion County Health Department at (503) 588-5611.
