(NEW YORK) - Embattled New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer handed in his resignation today effective on Monday. In a recent press conference, with his wife, Silda, at his side, Spitzer said: "I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people's work."

Spitzer took over the governor's office in 2006, and has faced calls for his resignation since apologizing for an undisclosed personal indiscretion Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors unsealed an affidavit detailing a rendezvous in a Washington hotel room last month as part of a federal prostitution investigation on Monday. Spitzer has reportedly spent more than $15,000 for several encounters with prostitutes.

The man who will replace Spitzer, 53-year-old Lt. Gov. David Paterson, will become the first black governor in the state and the fourth in U.S. history.

Let's not forget, he ONLY came clean when he was going to shown as a criminal (solicitation of prostitution) ... and you are right, Anne, it would have read differently if he was GOP... at least in this liberal, biased newspaper

Henry then maybe congress needs to draw up new ways of dealing with the chain of command. Do you have any ideas or possible remedies?

Henry Ruark March 14, 2008 2:27 pm (Pacific time)

Jessie et al: No less a military mogul than Gen. MacArthur stated (1953): "I find in existence a new and heretofore unknown and dangerous concept that the members of our armed forces owe primary allegiance and loyalty to those who temporarily execute the authority of the executive Branchof government rather than to the country and its Constitution which they are sworn to defend. No proposition could be more dangerous." THAT should be clear enough for anyone and is surely now clearly relevant to the role played by Admiral Fallen...as it was also for Gen.Smedley Butler of the Marine Corps.

Jessie March 14, 2008 9:10 am (Pacific time)

Well sister Sue, maybe in the next few months we will find out more about Spitzer and his cronies. This retired Admiral Fallen will be in the press a lot, I heard he's buds with Wes Clark. I never served in the military but I heard you fail to follow orders, then they kick you out or put you in jail. But I can understand why you can't have people do or say whatever they want. We'll see how this unfolds. Will he be with Clinton or Obama?

Sue March 13, 2008 3:09 pm (Pacific time)

Jessie: Agree with you. My point was it doesn't really matter whether he is a republican or a democrat. All groups have scum. I wish there was more press coverage on Gen. Fallens's resignation, though. He was the one with power. He was the guy that kept our wonderful leaders from bombing Iran. There isn't enough coverage about him because there is no sex involved.

Henry Ruark March 13, 2008 2:31 pm (Pacific time)

To all: Don't miss another obvious piece of "the big picture": Spitzer activities were hard impacting on Wall St.and some allied perpetrations, setting him up for precisely the kind of "political retaliation" now known to be recurring in other similar situations, as part of Bush-cabal operating pattern. Look for "new developments" on this angle soon...

Jessie March 13, 2008 12:48 pm (Pacific time)

The difference between Spitzer and the other elected politicians, was that Spitzer was putting people in jail for doing the same thing he was. As someone who had the ability to pardon, who knows if other's were or could put pressure on him to pardon some thug, even a convicted killer. The other officals were breaking the law but their power was nothing compared to Spitzer. He needs to do some jail time, a message must be sent.

Sue March 13, 2008 9:37 am (Pacific time)

And one more thing...while Newt Gingrich was pushing the impeachment of Clinton, he wasn't exactly on the morale high ground. He was cheating on his wife too. We should be cautious of those who claim to be above the rest. Maybe they are just trying to devert attention away from their misdeeds, just like Spitzer did.

Sue March 13, 2008 9:34 am (Pacific time)

Notice that the republicans are still in office....(vitter and craig). This isn't really about dems or pubs...it is about morals. I feel so bad for Spitzers family. Otherwise, I really don't care. There are more important things to worry about than who's doing who and how wide their stance is. Let's move on.

JB March 12, 2008 6:33 pm (Pacific time)

that's typical, he also endorsed Hillary Clinton for President and was a superdelegate.

Anne March 12, 2008 4:52 pm (Pacific time)

Amusing that this article somehow fails to note that this gentleman is a Democrat. I clearly recall an article spelling out Republican hypocrits for their sex scandals. Think it's safe to say that if this gentleman was pitching for the GOP this article would read a bit differently.
