Salem-Keizer Facilities Planning Committee Application Deadline Extended

Salem-News.com

(Salem) - The Salem-Keizer School District has extended the deadline for applications for the newly formed facilities planning committee. The School Board approved the formation of the new committee to look into long-term facility needs in Salem-Keizer. The committee will look into the growth of the student population within the district and recommend strategies. With those strategies, the district hopes to accommodate growth and balance school enrollment over the next 20 years.

Committee members will also review the viability of the district's current educational specifications for K-12 schools and how they impact the capacity, future capacity and condition of current and future schools.

Another area members will dedicate time toward is deferred maintenance. The 21 and 27 members will recommend options that address current and future needs. The committee will report to the school board, help develop and implement ground rules for operating, and solicit and review public input as it relates to their work. Members will also provide a summary report of public comments and actions taken by the committee as a result of public testimony. Committee slots currently filled will determine a quorum. The chair and vice chair of the committee will be appointed by the School Board. The work of the committee will be done through three main subcommittees related directly to the charges. Additional subcommittees may be created at the discretion of the committee. The School Board will determine a budget and allocate staff resources to support the work of the team. The leadership of the Board and the committee will work together on the parameters of the resources available.

All Long Term Facilities Planning Committee meetings will be held under public meeting law, open to the public and, if requested, interpreters will be available. The work of the committee will be completed once their recommendations are presented to the School Board.

There is an application and selection process for committee members. All Salem-Keizer residents have the opportunity to apply to serve on the Long Term Facilities Planning Committee.

The Ad Hoc Committee for the Long Term Facilities Planning Committee planning process will screen the applications and forward a recommendation to the School Board for appointments including a recommendation for Chair and Vice Chair of the committee. If you`re interested in applying, submit your application by Friday at 5:00 PM.
