Forty-One OSP Recruit Troopers Graduate Post-Academy Training

Graduation Saturday for Forty-One OSP Recruit Troopers Following Completion of Post-Academy Training‏

(SALEM, Ore.) - Forty-one Oregon State Police (OSP) recruit troopers will be graduating Saturday, March 7th, marking the end of nearly 25 weeks of training they received at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem.

Joining OSP Superintendent Timothy McLain for the graduation ceremony will be Oregon State Police Foundation Chair Gerry Frank. Starting January 2007, OSP integrated recruit trooper training with newly hired city and county officers for the 16-week DPSST training at the Oregon Public Safety Academy.

In addition to the DPSST training OSP recruit troopers also receive four weeks of pre- and five weeks of post-advanced training unique to the requirements of OSP, totaling 25 weeks of academy based training.

The 39 patrol and 2 fish and wildlife recruit troopers previously graduated from the DPSST Basic Police Training program.

This weekend's graduation marks the end of the post-advanced training and the completion of their 25 weeks of training. Thirteen graduating recruit troopers had previously completed a two to three month field training program with an OSP trooper and were working solo patrol prior to returning for this post-advanced training session.

The other 28 recruit troopers either will start their field training or were currently within the field training program prior to returning to complete this training session.

Superintendent McLain noted these OSP recruit troopers were hired and trained through approved funding provided during the 2007 legislative session with the support of Governor Ted Kulongoski and legislative leadership aimed to add 100 new OSP troopers and help OSP return to a minimal level of limited 24/7 patrol coverage.

"This graduation shows our continued commitment towards 24/7 state police coverage for Oregon," said Governor Kulongoski. "I am proud of these dedicated recruit troopers who have trained hard and are committed to serving the state and their local communities."

The recruit troopers will report back to their assigned OSP work sites at the following locations:
* Albany (3 – Patrol Services Division, 1 - Fish & Wildlife Division)
* Central Point (1)
* Florence (1)
* Gold Beach (2)
* Klamath Falls (2)
* La Grande (2)
* Newport (1)
* Ontario (5)
* Oregon State University (2)
* Portland (6)* Salem (2)
* Springfield (5)
* St. Helens (1 – Fish & Wildlife Division)
* The Dalles (2)
* Tualatin (5)

"These 36 men and 5 women are a big boost to our Department and the citizens of Oregon. Once they have completed the required level of training and are out on patrol, it will allow several of our offices to get closer to a minimal level of providing around-the-clock coverage," said McLain.

Separate from these 41 graduating recruit troopers, there are currently 9 recruit troopers who graduated from the 16-week DPSST Basic Police Training program on February 27th. They have now reported to their assigned work sites, started their field training program and are scheduled to return in June for a six-week OSP post-academy training. Joining them for the June post-academy training will be 30 recruit troopers who are currently participating in, or scheduled to begin, the 16-week DPPST program.
