(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - Weather forecasters say a disturbance pushing through the Northwest will break the heat in the north, but will also allow thunderstorms to form into Tuesday. Meanwhile, remaining heat to the south over much of California will continue to fuel fires and the smoke given off, Accuweather.com weather experts reported. An influx of Pacific air from an approaching disturbance brought relief from the heat Monday to coastal areas from northern California to Washington state, while the the Intermountain West remained hot. The slight cool-down is expected to progress inland over the Northwest Tuesday, while southern interior areas remain hot through the week. Pacific air has kept a check on temperatures along the Southern California coast over the weekend and will continue to due so through the balance of the week. Several daily temperature records were broken Sunday in the Northwest, including: * The Dalles, Ore.: 107° (old record 104° in 1987) * Walla Walla, Wash.: 105° (old record 102° in 1987) * Pasco, Wash.: 105° (old record 101° in 2000) * Pendleton, Ore.: 102° (old record 101° in 1948) * Redmond, Ore.: 100° (old record 95° in 1999) Accuweather.com reports that the heat continues to fuel the wildfires across northern and central California. There were more than 1,000 fires burning in the state as of Monday afternoon, with little relief in sight for embattled firefighters. A new fire broke out over the weekend in California, about 17 miles northeast of Caliente. The fire, called the Piute Fire, in the Sequoia National Forest has consumed 2,200 acres as of Monday afternoon, was spreading rapidly and was only three percent contained. Lightning sparked at least one fire Sunday in Morrow County, Ore. Smoke caused whiteout conditions along I-84 and Highway 730. Smoke reportedly continues to blanket much of northern California, with steering winds sending smoke and haze into parts of western Nevada and southern Oregon. Accuweather.com says the smoky conditions continue to create a health risk, especially for the elderly, children and anyone with respiratory illnesses. The Midwest Regional News story reports the heat across northern areas in the West will shift to the Plains. The Southwest Regional News story reports that moisture trapped underneath the zone of high pressure will continue to spark storms over much of the Rockies through the balance of the week, including the Four Corners region. --------------------------------------------------------- Story by Accuweather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski Salem-News Weather Related Links: Seven day weather forecast | Weather Stories | Road Conditions | Road Cameras Articles for June 29, 2008 | Articles for June 30, 2008 | Articles for July 1, 2008 | Quick Links
