(SALEM, Ore. ) - An overnight fire in northeast Salem, gave firefighters quite a battle before they got the fire under control.

Marion County Fire District No. 1 was called to a structure on fire at 180 Kenwood Ave NE just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Captain Joshua Darland said once firefighters arrived on scène they were informed by one of the home's occupants that there was a fire in the home.

Once inside, intense flames and heat forced firefighters back outside and battle the blaze from the outside of the home. Once knocked down, firefighters were able to re-enter the home and put the fire out.

The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, and the home was occupied by two people, one of which escaped the fire, while the other was not home at the time of the incident Darland said.

Damage to the home was mainly concentrated in an attic that was being used or remodeled into a bedroom.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
