Militant Attacks on Afghan Forces on Rise: Karzai

Afghan President Hamid Karzai says militant attacks on the security forces have been increased in the war-torn country in recent months.

(KABUL Press TV) - Hamid Karzai made the remarks on Thursday, a day after killing of 21 people by a bomb attack in Afghanistan’s eastern city of Khost.

"I have noticed that these days, in the past one, two or three months, attacks on our soldiers, police and intelligence officers have increased," Karzai said.

"Every day we have at least 20 to 25 casualties, every day at least 20 to 25 of our youths are making the sacrifice for this country and are being killed."

The 21 people were killed on Wednesday after a bomber riding a motorbike attacked a joint Afghan-NATO convey passing through the town.

Another bomb explosion on Wednesday left at least eight Afghan women and children dead in Afghanistan’s Eastern Logar Province.

Foreign and Afghan forces are being killed by Taliban militants on a nearly daily basis in Afghanistan.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of about 130,000 US-led forces in the war-ravaged country.

The US-led war in Afghanistan, with civilian and military casualties at record high, has become the longest military conflict in American history.

The United Nations announced on February 4 that 2011 was the deadliest year on record for Afghan civilians. The death toll rose eight percent compared to the year before and was roughly double the figure for 2007.

Afghan civilians have paid a high price since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.
