(SALEM, Ore. ) - The City of Salem Public Works Department wants you to Be Aware! of two road construction projects that begin on Monday. These projects could put a dent in your travels through the Salem-area. Remember to slow down when you see orange signs, barrels and barricades. Speeding is the second most common cause of work zone crashes. Beginning Monday, Swegle Road NE, between 45th Avenue NE and Royalty Drive NE, will be CLOSED to through traffic so construction can continue in this area. Residents and guests of residents along this section of street, Gem Place NE, Neota Street NE, Fultz Avenue NE, Antonia Avenue NE, and Geneva Avenue NE, are considered local traffic. Local traffic access will be maintained for residents who live within the closure area, their guests, garbage pickup, postal delivery, and emergency vehicles. In addition, improvements for the new Swegle School access road known as Aguilas Court NE, and parking areas will take place between Monday and August 30. Swegle Road NE and Aguilas Court NE are scheduled to reopen on August 30, 2014. The Safety Island: Fairground Road NE and Hood Street NE project is schedule to start on Monday. The project includes the installation of a safety median island on Hood Street NE and Fairgrounds Road NE from 5th Street NE to Shipping Street NE and constructing new curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The work for this project will be conducted in two phases. The phases will be as follows: • Phase 1 – North side of Hood Street NE and Fairground Road NE from 5th Street NE to Shipping Street NE. This work will include installing new curb ramps on the north side of these streets. • Phase 2 – South side of Hood Street NE and Fairgrounds Road NE from 5th Street NE to Shipping Street NE. Work will include the safety median island and installing new curb ramps on the south sides of these streets. Detour route for the work in this phase will be posted prior to beginning the phase. The work hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of August 2014.
