(SALEM, Ore.) - Senator Martha Schrader applauded the formation of the interim Veterans’ Affairs Committee –of which she was appointed chair this week. “The list of things we were able to accomplish for our veterans this last session is impressive,” said Schrader (D-Canby). “But that does not mean our work is done. As long as our brave men and women in uniform continue to sacrifice for our country, we have a moral obligation to look at the ways we can support them, their families, and make Oregon the Welcome Home State. This new committee will continue that important work.” Senate President Peter Courtney appointed Schrader to chair the committee, noting her advocacy on veterans’ issues and involvement in the Governor’s Task Force on Veteran’s Services in 2008. “Senator Schrader stands out as a passionate advocate for our men and women in uniform,” said Courtney (D-Salem/Gervais/Woodburn). “In addition to her strong leadership, she will bring a depth of knowledge to this committee that will produce meaningful legislation for our veterans.” During the 2009 session, Schrader was the chief architect of Senate Bill 700, creating the Veterans' Reintegration Task Force. Through that legislation, representatives from the Legislature and the departments of Human Services, Employment, Veterans Affairs, Housing and Community Services and Oregon University System will look at ways to help soldiers returning to civilian life –addressing issues such as health care, education, family, and employment. “I am proud of the work we did during the 2009 session for our veterans,” said Schrader. “As chair of the interim Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I will continue to fight to provide our soldiers and their families with opportunities for reintegration, support during deployment, and appreciation for their sacrifice.” Source: News release, Oregon Legislature Pictures from Afghanistan by Tim King: View Photos From Tim King's time in Afghanistan | More Afghanistan War photos Articles for July 29, 2009 | Articles for July 30, 2009 | Articles for July 31, 2009 | googlec507860f6901db00.html Quick Links
