Oregon Quartet Makes Noise at World Juniors

The third day of the competition will begin, Thursday at 10:00 a.m.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Incoming freshman Ariana Washington led a quartet of Oregon women competing at the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships, Wednesday, finishing seventh in the women’s 100.

Washington, who will be coming to Eugene from Long Beach Poly High School, recorded a time of 11.64 in the finals, after advancing second in her semifinal heat in 11.73.

Maggie Schmaedick placed 12th in the 5,000 in front of her home crowd of 7,085 fans. The Eugene native just missed a personal-best time, crossing in 16:19.01.

“I’m a little bit bummed to not get the PR, but I’m really happy to have had the opportunity to run in this race. It’s against really excellent competition so I feel really blessed that I got to run there.”

Ashlee Moore entered the day in 11th place in the heptathlon, but quickly made up ground with a strong performance and a personal best in the long jump, soaring 5.86m which ranked fifth in the field.

Moore then came up with a big throw on her final attempt in the javelin, recording a distance of 39.35m. The Phoenix Ariz., native finished in 13thoverall after the 800, setting a PR of 5,466 points.

“There’s a lot to work on,” Moore said. “So I’m excited to come back for college, especially here, and get to work on a few events.”

Christian Brennan qualified out of the first round of the women’s 400 and into the semifinals. Brennan, who was sporting the jersey of her native Canada, finished third in her heat while clocking a time of 54.84.

The third day of the competition will begin, Thursday at 10:00 a.m., and the afternoon session starting at 6 p.m. Oregon freshmen Brennan and Cole Walsh, who won the U.S. title weeks ago, will be competing.
