(ELSIE, Ore.) - ā€¸Oregon State Police troopers have cleared the scene of Monday afternoon's fatal traffic crash on Highway 26 west of Elsie. They say their investigation of the incident is continuing. The victim's name is being released following confirmation and next of kin notification. OSP Sergeant Andrew Merila says Monday at approximately 4:17 p.m. a full-size Chevrolet pickup driven by 37-year old William J. Pierce of Hillsboro, was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 20.

According to witnesses the pickup passed another vehicle in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed, lost control as it moved back into the westbound lane and struck an embankment.

It rolled several times before coming to rest on its top in the eastbound lane.

Mr. Pierce was pronounced deceased at the scene. Safety restraint use information is not available. Police say alcohol is a possible contributing factor.

OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

Local emergency responding agencies, the Clatsop County Medical Examiner and ODOT assisted at the scene.
