Could Obama's Word Avert the Looming Civil War and Genocide in Rwanda?

"I call upon you and your government, to support the RPP’s proposal for peace talks that is aimed to avert a new wave of civil war and genocide in Rwanda" - John V Karuranga, President Rwanda People’s Party

Peace
Peace is possible.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - On Monday, July 4, 2011 Rwanda celebrated its Independence/Liberation day which is the date to the end of the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda. In a public speech given to the nation on this day of celebration, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda stated that “the country has been liberated.”

He said this, knowing the track record of human rights violations on his own people and his inability to address the issues. It has created an unstable environment ripe for a violent explosion. If President Paul Kagame does not enter into peace talks very soon, Rwanda and the entire Great Lakes Region will face devastation once again in the form of civil war or genocide.

In a continued campaign for foreign backing and support in their quest for peace talks with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, the Rwanda Peoples Party have contacted various heads of state and governments including embassies and consulates accredited to the UK and Rwanda Governments, that include: President Barack Obama, David Cameron, the UK Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, the UK Deputy Prime Minister, Hillary Rodham Clinton, US State Secretary, Catherine Ashton the European Foreign Policy Chief, Speaker of the House Rep. John Boehner, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Chair Senate Foreign Relation Committee John F. Kerry, the President of the European Parliament, the African Union, the Secretary of Scandinavian Countries, Presidents of: the European People’s Party, the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, Confederation Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left, Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group, European Conservatives and Reformists. Further, Presidents, of the French National Assembly, German Bundestag, Russian Duma, Swedish Riksdag (Swedish Parliament), Norwegian Parliament, European Parliament, Chair of the Foreign Affair Committee Gabriele ALBERTINI, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, former President Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Rev. Rick Warren, the World Association of NGO's and religious leaders.

Also contacted for their support for peace talks are: The Carter Center, International Peace Foundation, Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Institution of Peace and Conflict Resolution, International Crisis Group, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, International Center for Transitional Justice, Minority Rights Group International, Global Center for the R2P, International Coalition on RtoP, WFM-IGP, ICC Coalition, Genocide Watch, Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, Global Action to Prevent War, Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Office of United Nations Affairs, European Network for Civil Society Association, as well as Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Major funding agencies including Europe Aid, IDA, UNDP and individuals which are the top financial backers of the Rwandan Government.

Dear Mr. President,
Subject: PROPOSAL FOR RWANDA PEACE TALKS

Please find herein attached a copy of the proposal for peace talks and accompanied document that my party, the Rwanda People’s Party wrote to President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

I am also attaching herewith copies of the Road to Rwanda and the First Anniversary of the Rwanda People’s Party for your attention. Both documents draw from the wisdom of your words spoken during the funeral of a nine-year victim, Christina-Taylor Green in Tucson, Arizona, whose life was cut notoriously short. I quote:  “At a time when we are far too eager to lay blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do – it’s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds.” Mr. President! Your message of hope and unity to the American people at times of despair, confusion and panic, also contains an abundance of wisdom which is relevant to the future direction of my country Rwanda.

Mr. President!  My determination of working for peace and democracy in my country was also strengthened by the Mr. Cameron and Mr. Clegg’s extraordinary leadership, which, while divided by their individuals’ party politics, remain united together by one common goal to: “Maintain and Preserve National Interest of the Great Britain” regardless of their party political differences.  I am proud to say that their coalition government is working well despite facing the day-to-day dissimilar challenges.  Mr. President, permit me to inform you that your words of wisdom spoken at the funeral of a nine-year victim, Christina-Taylor Green in Tucson, Arizona, and the Lib-Tory coalition in the UK are the kind of spirit and motivations that we want to take to Rwanda if we are to overcome the political challenges that have ruined our country for the past 52 years.

I wish to use this opportunity, Mr. President, on behalf of the most oppressed people, the poor, the  widows, the orphans and street children as well as the most vulnerable whose voices cannot be heard because they can’t speak for themselves. Therefore, I call upon you and your government, to support the RPP’s proposal for peace talks that is aimed to avert a new wave of civil war and genocide in Rwanda.

Mr. President, as a party, we are also very thankful to you and your government for the continued support (financially) to the Rwandan people.
Mr. President, Albert Einstein once said that, “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” Hence, as a party, we believe in “no tolerance for intolerance, no apology for the son of man for setting himself free”

We look forward to future fruitful cooperation with you as fraternal partners for peace and democracy in Rwanda.

Yours sincerely,
John V Karuranga, President
Rwanda People’s Party

Jennifer: Look at what he has and has not done so far. His focus is on what appears good for re-election. He is controlled by the political party who helped orchastrate his election just as every other president for the last 40 or so years in our country. I fear that you are riding a horse who is intent only on reaching the barn . . . trying to turn him is futile unless it helps his re-election chances. Sadly, we have no politicians who do not fit this mold as our current political system is based on greed and a thirst for power. They almost have us to a point where we will be completely unable to help ourselves . . . much less our brothers and sisters throughout the world.
