Marine Helicopter Crash Kills One at Camp Pendleton

(CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.) - One Marine is apparently dead and several others were injured around noon today in a helicopter crash at Camp Pendleton.

The training flight originated from the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The aircraft is reported to be a modern version of the Vietnam era UH-1 'Huey'.

This version, the UH-1Y, is referred to as a 'Yankee Huey'.

FOX News talked to a Marine Major named Jay Delarosa, who said the aircraft crashed in the San Mateo area, situated at the northern end of the 125,000-acre Camp Pendleton Marine base, about 50 miles north of San Diego.

A news report from SignOn SanDiego in Southern California indicates that one Marine has died from injuries sustained in the crash, and that the crash started a small brush fire.

A Marine Corps spokesperson named Sgt. Derrick Carlson, told Reuters, "It was a training incident, we are flying training at Camp Pendleton all the time."
