(SALEM) - Salem Fire investigators say a neighborhood off of Center Street NE was hit by an arsonist or arsonists early Thursday Morning. They say two cars were damaged when lit fireworks were thrown into the vehicles. One was a total loss, burned entirely from the hot flames. Firefighters say it is fortunate nobody was hurt. Salem Fire Department received their first call for a vehicle fire at 559 21st Street NE around 5:30 AM Thursday. Shortly after, another call came in for a second vehicle fire at 674 20th Street NE. Firefighters arrived to find a fully involved Chrysler Concorde. The other vehicle, an Isuzu Rodeo, was reached by its owners before it was consumed by fire. They were able to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher. Investigators with Salem Fire say damage was estimated at $7,000 for both vehicles that were involved in the fires that they describe as intentional. When vehicles are set ablaze, many things become involved including plastic, rubber and of course flammable liquid. Vehicles with empty or near empty gasoline tannks are the most dangerous. If a person ever encounters a car fire, the best advice is to stay clear, dial 911, and let the professionals do their job. Fire investigators say they have confirmed that fireworks were used to start both fires. Salem Fire teams and Salem Police Arson Detectives are looking for the suspect or suspects who may be responsible for the fires in the Center Street Neighborhood, and they appreciate any help from the community in locating those responsible before they strike again. Anyone who has information that would assist in the fire and police investigation is encouraged to contact the Salem Fire Department at 503-588-6245.
