(SALEM, Ore.) - The northbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Salem were restricted to one lane Saturday afternoon for about 90 minutes after a pickup caught fire and spread to a grassy hillside south of Salem.

Oregon State Police Trooper Steve Hinkle says at approximately 5:40 p.m. a 1994 Ford F-150 pickup towing a 5th wheel travel trailer was northbound when it began to smoke.

"After the driver pulled onto the right northbound shoulder at the exit 248 off ramp the pickup was fully engulfed in fire," Hinkle said.

"A citizen stopped and helped the driver separate the travel trailer from the pickup before it also caught fire. The pickup was extensively damaged by the fire."

Hinkle explains that the fire spread to a grassy hillside, damaging a small section of state highway property, including trees and brush.

Firefighters from Turner and Jefferson responded and put the fire out before any further public or private property damage occurred.

Two northbound lanes were closed for about 90 minutes during the fire suppression efforts. ODOT incident response coordinated traffic control during the lane restrictions.
