(KEIZER) - The Eugene Emeralds are on a two game winning streak, unfortunately those wins are coming against what was the hottest team in NWL baseball the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. Before a franchise record crowd of 5,628, the Emeralds scored first and never looked back beating the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-4 on what was a clear, but very windy night at “The Crater.” Eugene shortstop Nick Kliebert had a double and scored three runs. Kliebert and Chad Huffman had RBI doubles and Luany Sanchez added a two-run double in the third inning to put the Emeralds (9-7) on top, 4-0. Volcanoes starter Craig Whitaker (2-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on five hits and five walks, and two strike outs in 3 2/3 innings. Volcanoes third baseman Ryan Rohlinger's one-out, run-scoring double down the left-field line got the first run of the night home for the Volcanoes. Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, Volcanoes first baseman Will Thompson led off with a towering solo homer to right. His third homer of the season. Ryan Rohlinger, who finished with two hits, and second baseman Brad Boyer had RBI doubles in the fourth and fifth. Even with the loss, Salem-Keizer (12-4) remains in first place in the NWL Western Division one game ahead of the Vancouver Canadians. At least all was not lost for Volcanoes fans, a spectacular fireworks display brightened the night sky. Thursday the two teams square off again at Volcanoes Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
