(NEW YORK CITY) - The UN refugee agency urged Sri Lanka to postpone deportation orders for more than 300 foreigners seeking asylum, a spokeswoman said Monday.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees asked the External Affairs Ministry to grant more time to consider the requests. Most of the refugees were from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"Our appeal is pending and we are expecting a response soon," Sulakshini Perera said.

A Foreign Ministry official said no decision had been made yet.
