(VANCOUVER, B.C.) - Salem-Keizer pitching struggled against Vancouver, who took full advantage of its opportunities in a 10-2 win Monday night in front of 5,147 at Nat Bailey Stadium. Salem-Keizer allowed eight hits, six walks, five hit-by-pitch reaches, two errors, and a balk as the Canadians scored 10 unanswered runs to take the opening two games of the series. Christian Arroyo's first inning home run provided a brief spark as the Volcanoes took the early lead. It was Arroyo's first home run with Salem-Keizer and his fourth as a second-year Giants pro. Volcanoes starter Nick Gonzalez lasted just five batters after hitting the first two C's. Franklin Baretto singled two runs in to take the lead, and Vancouver never looked back. After the single, Gonzalez walked Ryan McBroom and then struck out Boomer Collins. Kirk Singer replaced Gonzalez on the mound. Next batter Michael De La Cruz reached on a fielding error by Volcanoes first baseman Jonathan Jones. With two outs, Chris Carlson walked with the bases loaded, scoring a run, and then Singer balked home McBroom. The C's added a run in the third inning as De La Cruz was hit and Carlson singled him home. Volcanoes reliever Jake McCasland came in for the bottom of the fourth and allowed five runs, highlighted by a two-out, bases-clearing double by Carlson, who finished with five RBI on the night, as Vancouver took a 10-1 after the end of the frame. Miguel Castro cruised through the game, finishing with five innings of work, allowing three hits, two walks, one run, and a season-best seven strikeouts. Volcanoes catcher Jared Deacon scored in a run on a bases-loaded wild pitch from C's deliver Mark Biggs, making it the final of 10-2. The five hit batters was a franchise record that had been set at four HBP three separate times. The season series is 5-2 Vancouver and sets up a scenario where the Volcanoes must win the next three games to avoid dropping six straight series to Vancouver dating back to July, 2012. Up Next: A special "Nooner at the Nat" on Canada Day, 2014 at Nat Bailey Stadium. Game three of the series will feature Volcanoes starter Ethan Miller against C's starter Zak Wasilewski.
