Prime Time for Primaries: An Amazing Maze!

If there were ever a Truth-in-Advertising Law required of political campaigns, the picture would be very different.

Primaries 08
Special thanks to papersculpt.com for the American flag image

(SALEM, Ore.) - Primary Season 2008 in the heated race for the Presidency is almost at the halfway mark. This is an amazing maze we voters face. The lack of no incumbent president or v.p. running this time around leaves a power vacuum, with a pack of wolves hungry to fill this.

What are primaries all about? They are contest between presidential candidates, some truly viable and others less so. There are those who see themselves as self-anointed successors to hugely unpopular President Bush, while others are simply going through the motions and using the platform to "deliver a message".

Have no doubt that there are many players behind the scenes. Virtually every enterprise in America has a vested interest on who occupies the Oval Office, and how it effects their own survival and scope of influence. Be not surprised that campaign money is flowing to favor one given candidate to the exclusion of others.

If you were shopping for a Chief Executive in the supermarket, what shelf would you pick? Would you reach for the most attractive box as designed by the Madison Ave. crowd, or have you the patients to study and analyze the ingredients? More likely the first.

These days, campaign staffers are eagerly wanting to drive up the "negatives" of the rival. Nobody sits there with a polygraph to test out the truth factor, unfortunately. If there were ever a Truth-in-Advertising Law required of political campaigns, the dropouts would prevail.

Listen very carefully to the words of the rhetoric. Most is geared to set a mood that you the voter can identify with. They want you to think, "I like what he/she is saying" without there being an iron-clad promise. It's clearly an appeal to our sentiments. It would be mischievous fun to take out the Inaugural Address of the last president of that party and compare it to the current candidate's vision. Note the discrepancies!

At this point in Presidential Primary Season '08, all but one of the top-tier contenders are US Senators or former Senators. That should establish an important litmus test for voters to judge their effectiveness as consensus builders. Let me clarify on this:

* All Presidents cannot do it alone. They must achieve the approval of Congress on all policy and budget items before they can sign any legislation;

* If a sitting US Senator has a track-record of being "persuasive" with other lawmakers that give us confidence that gridlock will be greatly reduced;

* If that sitting Senator continuously introduced bills that die in comittee or never make it to the President's desk for signing, that is an ominous sign;

* Finally, should a Senator be highly deficient in introducing new ideas for legislation how can we voters we convinced they will magically become "agents of change"?

In my more idealistic moments when much younger, I once wondered what might happen if:

>All candidates had to sign a contract to produce whatever they promised in speeches should they actually be elected;

>If my midterm they failed to carry out 50% of those promised, they would leave office in favor up the runner-up candidate;

>In essence, this makes a reality of the metaphor: produce, or get off that pot!

If this were to materialize, to be sure, the shape of integrity in politics would forever change. Yes, integrity in politics. Or is that simply an oxymoron?

Depending on how the new enforcement of illegal immigration laws work in say places like Arizona, Oklahoma, etc. , I say we in Oregon simply enforce our laws currently on the books (no new legislation needed!). I have no doubt that the very liberal 9th Circuit will throw up some roadblocks, but in the meantime we can see what state legislators are selling us Americans out and we can take appropriate action against them. I strongly believe that those who keep attempting to delay or question the motives of the "majority" in this very serious matter are simply open-border zealots who have no use for America or our Constitution, and want to see us marginalized by these criminal invaders. I generally ignore these types, because they are so incredibly irrelevant. Coming soon: A report on the New York Times and how they are not only lying about our troops but also doing all they can to hurt their morale by providing false info to their readers. Irrefutable proof!

Jefferson February 1, 2008 12:50 pm (Pacific time)

Neal your desired description of the republican party is similar to what millions of us conservatives also want. I assure you we have utter contempt for Bush, but we know that some of his policies are acceptable, but he really fooled us. Though we never would have voted for Gore or Kerry, and now we might have to hold our nose to vote for the Hanoi Candidate...we will pull together no matter what to keep a Clinton or Obama out of office. My hope is that congress starts listening to the public, because frankly, outside of a military attack, I see nothing more important than securing our borders and prosecuting employees who illegally hire illegals. They will self-deport. If nothing is done, we will be in store for an incredibly violent time coupled with martial law...My family and close friends have the resources to keep relatively safe, but those in the cities and urban area's will be in a living hell. You can already find places throughout the country now that are in a constant state of violence coupled with other socially and economically repressive environments. It's starting in area's of Portland metro, but the media is minimizing their reporting on it...

To all: Robert Reich is famous for insights in economics and social issues. This is from his blog: (He refers to business tax break for new equipment in the stimulus bill sought by Congress.) "This tax break exemplifies the illogic of what’s called supply-side economics. If you reduce the cost of investing, so the thinking goes, you’ll get more investment. "What’s left out is the demand side of the equation. Without consumers who want to buy a product, there’s no point in making it, regardless of how many tax breaks go into it." Which gets us to the real problem. Most consumers are at the end of their ropes and can’t buy more. Real incomes are no higher than they were in 2000, while food and energy and health care costs are all rising faster than inflation. And home values are dropping, which means an end to home equity loans and refinancing."

Henry Ruark February 1, 2008 6:55 am (Pacific time)

To all: True "conservative" learns from reality. Others claiming that stance to hide true allegiance deny that reality. H-I-W has insisted economy simply having small tantrum, soon passeth away. Here's reality as test: U.S. Economy Unexpectedly Sheds 17,000 Jobs By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM New York Times "The economy lost 17,000 jobs in January, the Labor Department reported on Friday, an unexpected decline that marks the most striking evidence yet that the United States may be slipping into a recession. "Jobs disappeared across a broad spectrum of professions, with the steepest losses coming in the manufacturing, construction and goods-producing industries. "The unemployment rate, after jumping to 5 percent in December, fell back slightly to 4.9 percent. "With the collapse of the housing market, trouble on Wall Street and the continuing fallout of the subprime mortgage crisis, many economists have pointed to the continued growth in the labor market as the final holdout in a sluggish economy. "The employment report puts the job market in a startlingly different light. Economists had predicted a substantial gain in January payrolls, and leading indicators seemed to suggest a relatively strong report. "Instead, the government reported the first decline in jobs in four years." It is impossible to know what to do about a problem when reality is denied for outmoded, erroneous political reasons.

Henry Ruark January 31, 2008 5:04 pm (Pacific time)

To all: "Conservative" ? Like h...!! Real conservatives --and I've known some very good ones, fair, decent, non-malignant, non-attacking, and open to reality-- would throw up if forced to associate with the likes of hole-in-wall. Here we have dedicated neocon determined to kill off any opponent, in any way possible, by whatever lies, mistatements, construances, or otherwise can be accomplished. Blandishment and suck-up stuff falls a bit short, after long-continued, very revealing continuance of attack which began with "demented", "girly boy", "do-nothings", and many similar. He has stated FDR worst president ever, Oliver North is "hero", and Mitt Romney will be the man... Character must count for something, so start with his early involvement with torture technique of waterboarding, and add "command and control he self-reported re military service, and see where that takes you on any credibility built on responsibility and accountability.

Neal Feldman January 31, 2008 2:36 pm (Pacific time)

Jefferson - I disagree (big surprise there!). Yes I oppose illegals and amnesty for them. I define amnesty as anything short of their going back physically to their home country to wait at the end of the line for legal immigration. If they get to stay here they are still jumping the line.. they are not at the end of the line by any sane definition. However whether it be Clinton or Obama who wins in November the issue will not go away as the opposition to illegals crosses political lines. And the feelings run hot and deep and no politician ignores such and acts against such without severe political peril. It was not Shrub who stopped the misnamed Dream Act (Amnesty Act in reality). As such it will not matter who is in the white house the days of the almighty illegal are waning significantly and I expect within ten to twenty years severe fines against employers and landlords dealing with illegals, absolute (other than lifesaving care at ER - sucking chest wounds not the sniffles) denial of any and all social services to those not here legally, less catering to them (press one for English should be gone by then too) etc. If the religious reich did not have such a stranglehold on the republican party I might consider from time to time voting republican. But so long as they remain the party of theocracy I never will, regardless of other views or topics. Separation of church and state is simply that important. If the GOP went back to just being fiscal conservative socially moderate respecting states' rights (not just sometimes but always) and keeping the budget balanced and govt out of our lives as much as possible things would be different. But the current GOP is nothing on any level I could ever bring myself to vote for. Ah well...

Jefferson January 31, 2008 10:48 am (Pacific time)

Neal thanks for your post, I will give it all the attention it deserves. In fact I think it would be impossible for me to hold it on a different level than I currently do... Just to update you Neal, I am a conservative and have absolute contempt for the "current" republican establishment and millions of us are looking forward to the day when Bush leaves office. What you will probably realize in the not too distant future, that whether it is Clinton or Obama, even us conservatives will unite with others to assure that neither democratic candidate gets elected next November. What I have read from some of your past posts Neal is that you also are concerned about illegal aliens...so what do you think would happen to America if Clinton or Obama get elected? This will be the primary issue come next summer (unless we have acts of domestic terrorism, and the voters know demo's are hopelessly inadequate in national security), and currently 80% of Americans want some agressive action taken with illegals...the democratic candidates have made their bed as per their stated positions. If either won, then add another 50+ million (at a minimum) illegal alien family members streaming in, and then the United States of Babel begins...a civil war of gigantic proportion would take place, and China would not hesitate to attack Taiwan, then the real end of days would begin...

To all: Hayakawa, 'way back in the 40s, pointed out the desperate plight in which such as h-i-w place themselves by their very ironbound refusal to even begin to understand what language does and how it works for all. This statement reveals precisely that kind of misunderstanding, placing emphasis solely on what h-i-w sees as realities, while most others refer to the real thing, not the words which can at best only partially describe the facts of life. Here's the statement in hand here; interpret it for yourselves: "People "domestic insurgents" come to us in many disguises. Be vigilant!" WHAT "disguises" ? WHY is "insurgency" in and of itself so WRONG --as surely implied here: "Be vigilant" By what motivation does h-i-w attribute every possible action to attack ? Is there NO WAY in which some might happen to be good faith, cooperative action, if so received and reciprocated ? For detailed understandings, no better place to start than Hayakawa, available widely. This note occurs since just re-found, and am re-reading, my original copy, first marked up at Camp Devens, in Army service, in 1945. From some 500 total books most on language, writing, media, communications, and various levels of management, this one still stands out.

Henry Ruark January 31, 2008 5:07 am (Pacific time)

Neal et al: Thank you for comprehensive view of realities, to which I will only add that real reason all such "HATE FDR !" and react as they do on so many other issues is that they share upper 10% of income levels, thus face dollar-pain when government is forced to take care of unfortunates who do not start with inheritance from Daddy... Which is why most of us common folk, who must sweat and bleed to "get ahead" while this small dollar-bound tribe manipulate each and every aspect of life via dollar-power, corporate contributions, political blackmail, "noise machine" funded by Far Right billionaires, AND such willing workers as impose their own contempt and foolish economic fancies on this channel. "Believe"-them if you so choose...and you will pay the consequences summed up so neatly: "The truth will make you free --if you can recognize and appreciate it."

Neal Feldman January 30, 2008 10:06 pm (Pacific time)

Jefferson - your fevered delusional dreams are quite telling. First off Mitt has about as much chance of winning the nomination as Guliani does... read:zero. Ann Coulter as attorney general? I thought it could get no worse than crony in chief Gonzalez but if that nit-witted cadaverous bimbo were ever appointed to the position I doubt she would be confirmed... the peals of laughter from the senate at the mere thought of such an appointment would likely drown out the one or two who might take the nomination seriously. The twilight zone spawned ravings of the lunatic Coulter almost make your blatherings seem nearly sane by comparison. Almost. Ronald Reagan, raised to deity level only by neocons, has had his policies exposed for the frauds they were. As for Jimmy Carter what, exactly, do you claim he did that was so bad? He had nothing to do with the overthrow of the Shah of Iran... a vicious thug that past presidents had put into power and supported. Not saying Carter was one of the greatest presidents but if you are gonna blame him for the oil crisis then Shrub gets full and absolute blame for 9-11. Your boy Shrub is by far the worst president this country has ever (and hopefully will ever) have. It is amazing how much neocons such as yourself base your sophistry and your flawed abd fallacious critical thinking on the revisionist history tactics you have already begun to employ. Ah well...

Neal Feldman January 30, 2008 9:43 pm (Pacific time)

Jefferson - You trying to point at another for 'rather unique reality'? LMAO! Project much? Ah well...

Henry Ruark January 30, 2008 12:57 pm (Pacific time)

To all: Further re pundits living with what they punditted, h-i-w has been calling all recession indicators only a small bump in the road, just a hard place to work over. In face of many indicators shared here, his answer has been to demean, ridicule, delay reacting to fact, and in all ways refusing to react to the realities. NOW see this: Breaking News Alert The New York Times Wednesday, January 30, 2008 -- 2:15 PM ET ----- Fed Cuts Key Rate by Half-Point "Saying it was acting to head off a recession, the policy-setting committee of the Federal Reserve Board reduced its benchmark short-term interest rate, the federal funds target, to 3 percent, from 3.5 percent." You will recall that the preceding slash, only a short time ago, was itself received as overdue appreciation from the Feds for the worldwide impacts and desperately serious situations now faced universally, here and abroad. Anyone left who wishes to bet future on prognostications coming from that aperture ??

Jefferson January 30, 2008 9:36 am (Pacific time)

People "domestic insurgents" come to us in many disguises. Be vigilant!

Henry Ruark January 30, 2008 6:08 am (Pacific time)

To all: Select quotes re hole-in-wall PayNoAttention: "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much, it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little" : Franklin Delano Roosevelt "Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic? Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question - is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; but one must take it because it is right. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them. There is almost no kind of outrage-----torture, imprisonment without trial, assassination, the bombing of civilians .. . which does not change its moral color when it is committed by 'our' side. The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them." --George Orwell

Re: Carolynbaker.net as trumpeted by her biggest follower as per 9:43 am/1-29-08 poster, please get a glimpse of her rather unique reality as per her quote below and this may help you understand why some think and write as they do...: "My intention is to offer a beacon of light in the smothering darkness with which we seem to be engulfed, making available information and specific ideas and strategies which we all might utilize as we experience the life/death/rebirth process inherent in the inner and outer realms of our current reality.” Yeah, Rod Serling would have loved that quote as he started out each episode of Twilight Zone...LOL. Geez

Jefferson January 29, 2008 12:27 pm (Pacific time)

The below 10:56 post is a matter of ["RECENT"] public record, beware of those who ask you to ignore the public record. Though please observe "1984" delusional behavior with "your own eyes" LOL P.S. Me thinks someone has issues with President Reagan, well, welcome to the minority! Even the current democratic party presidential candidates marvel at his accomplishments! As do any objective historian...but not the liberal fascists, and as usual they will always be relegated to the bellowing in the wind minority. I wonder if there is some "green energy" to be tapped here? LOL

Henry Ruark January 29, 2008 11:44 am (Pacific time)

To all: Do you, too, detect a strange echo in that noise coming from the hole-in-wall ? Here's what was written: "The truth about what this party actually is as plain as day for all to see." Could NOT "agree more" BUT it applies equally to both distorted/perverted groups of what was once decently democratic two-party system, definitel set on deep damage and depressive demeanors by the historic happenings begun in the Reagan "administration" by same cabal-perpetrators we now find desperately seeking any way out, while whining, lying, lashing out via name calling and smearing tactics such as OCPP with "communist" purposes... SO simply smear on easy hole-filler (Pay No Attention) whenever you find continuing simplistic, silly, evasive and misleading piles of words pretending to be precise statement of complex political issues and deeply personal reflections from our American history, chosen and changed to fit malign channel-damage done here by such distractions and distortions.

Jefferson January 29, 2008 10:56 am (Pacific time)

Sen. Barack Obama easily won the African American vote in South Carolina, but to woo California Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. ... Obama's intention is to draw distinctions between himself and Clinton on what are otherwise indistinguishable positions on immigration. So he's going to come out full force in favor of driver's licenses for illegals in California to peel off some of the support of the Hispanics for Hillary. Does he not recall why Gov. Davis was recalled? That over 80% of Americans are against this? Or is he just showing how incredibly stupid and short-sighted he is? What a leader, heck with the laws on the books and what the majority of American's want! Get the primary win no matter who he has to pander to, then let voter fraud save him in the general election?! Not this time, we have people making sure the process is going to be transparent, for example what happened in King County in Washington, or Cook County, Ill., ad nauseum, never again! Now, where is Hillary? She could say, "I've talked to Governor Schwarzenegger, I understand what he's trying to do here," who knows. But the Democrat Party is divided purely along racial lines, it really is, "just let your own eyes verify" LOL. Look at the outcome. You had white women vote for Hillary, you had nearly all blacks vote for Barack, and you had white guys vote for Edwards, the Breck Girl. The bloom is off the rose. The truth about what this party actually is as plain as day for all to see.

Henry Ruark January 29, 2008 10:43 am (Pacific time)

To all: Sorry for inadvertent retreat behind "anon"...just below...if you did not recognize style, this admits to strong feeling re malign intent to distort/pervert obvious realities, damaging open, honest dialog in channel intended for democratic discussion leading to learning and better citizen decisions by all. NOW let's plaster hole-in-wall shut by simple provision of documented-source informed opinion from numerous sources, while what we read from h-i-w is only "ME !! ME !! ME !!" --which, by the way, is sure symptom of narcissism fully demonstrated here in depth, detail, profusion and continued prolixity.

Anonymous January 29, 2008 9:43 am (Pacific time)

To all: Pay no attention to noisome noises from hole-in-wall non-ID source for neocon nonsense further perpetrated. Public record now accessed easily by all in both press and Internet channels shows unavoidable realities of ongoing extremely high costs of "wasting war", in both lives and treasures, impacting every American life. Primary system demonstrates American principles, despite distorting and perverting influences widely felt in every state via "corporate campaign contributions, which seldom surveilled and reported by media but with tremendous impact on voters AND on their current legistors, as in Oregon itself. But real life undisturbed by inane insanities and fantasies perpetrated here, and by now wellknown to all for what they really are. For single-day reliable source documentation of these realities, "see with own eyes" http://carolynbaker.net; then visit your own choice, and use own brain to prove up points made here continuously for any reader.

Jefferson January 29, 2008 8:40 am (Pacific time)

I'm sure that shortly after Mitt is sworn in next year he can issue an executive order to our new Attorney General (Ann Coulter) to put on notice all the country's Secretary of States (or equivalents) that a voter by voter citizenship verification will be done immediately (Homeland Secretary Duncan Hunter can assist!). That of course will have a dramatic effect on all future elections (but still states should be able to set their own primary dates, regardless of what other witless people think). I imagine the criminal courts will be quite busy...maybe our students can be updated with more relevant histories of past presidents, e.g. , Jimmah Cottah and the mess he created and what no doubt an individual of immense talent (Ron Reagan) was able to overcome, while that even now current democratic presidential candidates have voiced absolute marvel...at least they demonstrate one positive quality...

Henry Ruark January 29, 2008 7:34 am (Pacific time)

To all: Sorry, Neal, but cannot agree since we show 200 years of history during which, on many occasions, wit, wisdom and will of Americans has taken precedence even over absolutely determined efforts to suppress and sabotage it. Votes leading to New Deal one shining example, with Keynsian remedies for economy then following, even if at first reluctantly. THEN followed great decades with foundation for middle class seeking "the American Dream" --and debacle only on way via Reagan arrival and multiple sell-out to corporate and business slf-interests... which we see further exemplified in current Bush II debacle. "Integrity in politics" ? Yes,indubitably, via Washington, Lincoln, both Roosevelts. When the people pay attention, understand issues, exercise wit, wisdom and will, then we do well. When "the media" and open channels for honest democratic dialog are subdued, subverted, sabotated and otherwise damaged, then we submit ourselves to situations similar to what we now must experience until Bush II disaster is remedied. Will buy that three-shot approach leading to final pot-test anytime...do believe it reflects what Founders had firmly in mind from the very start of Federalist Papers blog from which arose our American Revolution. Thanks for reminder of those original realities, Lee ! Let's hear more from your solid understandings of our realities.

Neal Feldman January 27, 2008 7:54 pm (Pacific time)

It is unfortunate that the majority of voters allow themselves to be led around by the nose ring and be manipulated by the fancy smoke and mirrors and bread and circuses antics. One might think after so many centuries they would learn... but unfortunately I keep coming to the inescapable conclusion that most human beings are utter morons. Sorry, but while I wish it were otherwise the facts quite clearly support only this conclusion. Ah well...
