(SALEM, Ore.) - This past winter weather has been a unique challenge to the City and it’s Parks Operations Division, officials with the city report.

The snow, ice and wind storms have left many fallen trees, downed limbs, and broken limbs still in trees throughout the city. The cleanup from damaged City trees along streets and in parks is expected to continue for the next few months.

Salem officials say numerous citizens have expressed interest in cutting up fallen street or park trees for fire wood.

"While offers of help are appreciated, this wood is the City of Salem’s responsibility," a news release from Salem indicated.

"The City has a contract with Marion County Youth Services to remove all wood from these fallen trees. The wood is then delivered to low income seniors or sold to support their program. In addition, wood chips generated from the City’s cleanup efforts are used in the parks."

City staff say they appreciate the patience of residents as Parks Operations employees work through their list of reported tree damage incidents.

This list is prioritized based on safety and clearance issues. City staff asks that the public not add their own tree cuttings or trash to city tree debris piles awaiting pick up by Park and Tree Maintenance staffs.

Salem officials remind property owners that maintenance of trees on private property is their responsibility.

Licensed and certified tree services can be found by searching the Internet.
