(KEIZER) - The Keizer Fire District responded to a record number of calls for emergency services in 2006. The District responded to a total of 3,404 calls for service during the year, which compares to 3,320 calls for service in 2005. The increase marks the ninth straight year, and the 12th year in the last 14 years, the District has seen an increase in emergency responses. The District’s medical crews responded to 2,663 requests for emergency medical service. This category of calls covers people who are injured in accidents or suffering from medical conditions such as heart attacks. District firefighters responded to a total of 78 fire calls. Of that number, 23 were for residential fires which include private homes and apartments. Unfortunately, one fatality was recorded in a house fire that occurred on October 13th. Other fire situations responded to include fires in commercial businesses, cars, brush or grass and dumpster or rubbish. District officials noted that 2006 was the third straight year the Keizer Fire District saw a decline in the number of fire calls received. The District responded to 118 fire calls in 2004 and 108 in 2005. The report also indicates the dollar loss caused by fire was significantly reduced. Recorded dollar loss in 2004 was $613,250; $488,400 in 2005 and $351,222 in 2006. Other types of calls for service included 22 false alarms and 5 responses for various types of hazardous conditions. The District also responded to 21 requests for assistance from other fire agencies. The Keizer Fire District made 7,205 public education contacts in 2006. These contacts were made in classes to students in area schools and community groups. The number also includes community events such as open houses and fairs where life safety information is presented.
