(SALEM) - Sources in Myanmar report that police shot and killed eight Rohingya people in a new round of sectarian strife in Kiladon village near Maungdaw. Sheerrsha News in Dhaka and The BBC report that a meeting is taking place in Godusara today. Nurul Islam with Grassroots Welfare Association, Bangladesh (GWAB), says they received news from a reliable source from Maungdaw that the exact death toll could be higher. At this point, people Kiladon village are still trying to determine the number of casualties. Government authorities have asked the villagers of Kiladon village to return homes from hiding. Today, a meeting among Rohingya villagers and govt. authorities and UNHCR staff is being held in Godusara village. We will carry more information on this development, for now the severe tense situation is still prevailing in the area. Long simmering racial tensions between the dominant Rakhine Buddhists and the minority Rohingya Muslims broke out in July 2012. Tens of thousands of Rohingya people were routed from their homes in the ensuing months, many ended up in IDP (Internal Displacement) camps and many ended up dead, there are no accurate numbers. While the government has carried out an actual Genocide against the Rohingya people, they have had no way to flee. Many have taken to boats, only to be turned around from the shores of places like Bangladesh.
