(GRESHAM, Ore.) - The city of Gresham recently opened the first phase of its planned 14,000 square foot skate plaza at Main City Park on S. Main Avenue.

Laura Bridges-Shepard, Gresham's Communications Manager, says the first phase is comprised of street elements that include stairs, banks, ramps, ledges, and other urban street course design features totaling 5,710 square feet.

"The park is for skateboarding and in-line skating only. No bikes, BMX, motorized vehicles or other wheeled devices are allowed. Currently skaters can use the park from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m."

She says beginning April 1, skaters can use the park from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. until September 30 when the hours will revert back to 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. through March 31.

For skaters 10 and under a "slow skate" period from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays has been established to provide safe access and skate time for less experienced skaters. A full list of park rules and hours are at GreshamOregon.gov.

"The City worked closely with a SkatePark Committee and our general contractor Dreamland Skateparks during the design process to ensure a park that would be appealing to skaters would be built," Bridges-Shepard said.

"The City also worked closely with other residents and community groups to ensure the park will be compatible with other nearby uses."
