(SALEM) - A Salem-Keizer School District bus driver was in critical condition late Monday night following three hours of surgery for head injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run accident earlier in the day.

Salem police spokesman Lt. Dan Deitz says 65-year-old Gary Phillips of Salem was struck about 6:10 AM at the Hawthorne Ave and D Street intersection near the Salem-Keizer School District’s bus barn.

Gary and his wife Linda have been married for 42 years and have five children, three daughters, who live in Salem, two sons, and 12 grandchildren.

Gary and Linda moved to the Salem area two years ago to be closer to their grandchildren.

Linda Phillips, wife of Gary Phillips said "We urge the driver who hit our husband and father to turn him or herself in. It's the right thing to do.

In our prison ministries we have learned that people hurt when they aren't honest, and we think that it will help the driver if they admit to their mistake.

"Gary made it through the evening. The doctors tell us that he remains in critical condition. "We thank all the friends who have shared their concern and prayed for us and the Salem Hospital staff for their care."

Fellow bus driver’s coming to work yesterday were in shock and disbelief over the accident.

Some even found it to hard to walk by the area where he was hit.

They called Phillips, who is also a part-time minister for area jails, a wonderful man and a true gentleman.

Police are looking for a silver or light gray 1995 - 2000 Dodge Stratus, Plymouth Breeze or Chrysler Cirrus, which has it’s driver’s side mirror missing.

Police also believe the car may have sustained hood, windshield, fender, and roof damage.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Salem Police Department Traffic Control Unit at (503) 588-6171, or their message line, (503) 588-6293.
