ABOUT ELMER BERGER: Rabbi Berger was an advocate of the traditional view of American Reform Judaism. He believed that Judaism is a religion of universal values, not a nationality, and that Americans of Jewish faith are Americans by nationality and Jews by religion just as other Americans are Baptists, Catholics or Presbyterians. His view is that religion and nationality are separate and distinct -- the position of the l885 declaration of Reform Jewish principles known as the Pittsburgh Platform. Zionism, on the other hand, believes that Jews are a national or ethnic group, that Israel is their "homeland" and that all Jews living outside of Israel are in "exile." In Berger's view, Judaism was corrupted by Zionism which made the State of Israel -- not God -- the object of worship, a form of idolatry.
