Jan-02-2012 15:32TweetFollow @OregonNews Bus Terminal Illness - CPR Anyone?Barry Lee Coyne Salem-News.comWe intend to act as responsible citizens without calling upon Salem city government as we build bridges to the Greyhound organization.
(SALEM) - Sometimes a community suffers a disease much like human patients. This very much seems to be so in the case of the current Greyhound terminal located just east of Macy's and the Salem Center in downtown Salem. Our challenge: Upgrade Downtown Salem. Several non-specialists have rendered their terminal diagnosis – advanced blight. The search is now on by the recently formed Boost Cherry City Committee (BCCC) for one or more remedies. BCCC is seeking the public's input to move toward viable solutions while we engage in a friendly conversation with the management team from Greyhound Lines.
We intend to act as responsible citizens without calling upon Salem city government as we build bridges to the Greyhound organization. We want to begin on a small scale by suggesting easy-to-do low-budget items. Examples are: 1. Place user-friendly downtown Salem map inside the terminal for guiding visitors;
2. Make Cherriots bus route schedules available for those wanting local bus service;
3. Setup tourist info kiosk to assist newcomers on nearby places and events;
4. Have Salem Center's food court offer food discounts to Greyhound passengers;
5. Seek excess magazines from our library and others to enable the waiting room to transform into a peaceful, reader-friendly place as an alternative to boredom. At a later point, we are hopeful that Greyhound can commit to a sprightly paint job for the terminal's eroding exterior. The facade does not do justice to the state's capital city. It does little to enhance attracting passengers. Church and Center needn't resemble a ghost town and the BCCC folks, for the sake of wanting a classier-looking showcase block come 2013, are ready to work with Greyhound to find partners to help this vision move forward. As with the Salem Peace Mosaic project, we fully intend to help develop grants to upgrade this neglected part of downtown. We know all too well that Rome was not built in one day. January2012 is our starting point for action. When Greyhound turns 100 in 2014, let's all hope and pray we have cause to celebrate our town's mass transit transformation.
