(SALEM, Ore.) - In this special video report, Jennifer Bailey with Oregon Emergency Management, talks to Salem-News.com about what steps residents should take in preparing for flooding conditions as rivers reach and exceed bank levels in different parts of western Oregon The Willamette River in Salem is running at a very high level, but Friday has been good for many parts of Oregon including the capitol city, where residents have feared flooding from the state's swollen rivers. While Salem is faring well, that is not the case in many parts of the state. Areas with residential and business development along rivers require extra measures to protect property. At times, Bailey says, the best thing to do is evacuate. She says another serious problem in Oregon involves drivers who choose to ignore 'closed street' signs. She explains that drivers in flooded areas can hit sections of road that disappeared but are not visible. Each year drivers die from conditions produced by flooding. Bailey says it is never worth it. "Our saying around here is, "Don't drown, turn around." Columbia County, a scene of severe flooding last December, declared a state of emergency today. Portland has reported a number of street and road closures. Lake Oswego has experienced a mudslide that still has one home under an evacuation order. Other developments and updates:

Clackamas County Emergency Operations Center Clackamas County closed its Emergency Operations Center at 5:00 PM Friday. The majority of critical issues relating to the Friday storm are being addressed, according to county officials. The EOC is expected to reopen Saturday at 9:00 AM. Citizens may then call 503-655-8211 to report non-life-threatening issues related to the flooding or to provide information about local resources. For life-threatening emergencies, call 911. Two roads were closed and one road was reopened in Washington County on Friday afternoon. County crews will be on standby overnight to respond as needed if conditions change. Tomorrow, two bridge inspection teams are scheduled to perform post-storm inspections of rural area bridges. New closures: Added at 7:59 PM 1-2-09 - NW 334th Avenue was closed north of Tualatin Valley Highway and south of the railroad tracks - SW Bates Road between Old Highway 47 and Patton Valley Road Reopened for travel: - SW Division Street between 183rd and 184th Avenues was reopened for travel. ODOT Region 1: 6:30 PM UPDATE ° U.S. 26 (Mt. Hood Highway) will remain closed between Sandy and the Alder Creek area (mileposts 24 to 35) until Sunday evening. The detour on county roads is not suitable for a large number of vehicles; motorists should expect long delays. A better and faster choice for through traffic (i.e., skiers) is to use I-84 through the Columbia Gorge to OR 35 or U.S. 97. ° Exit ramp at 10th Street on I-205 Southbound will remain closed until further notice (Interstate is open; just exit ramp is closed). ° Historic Columbia River Highway remains closed due to slides between Vista House and Multnomah Falls. No schedule for reopening yet. UPDATE
