(CENTRAL POINT, Ore.) - Oregon State Police, working in cooperation with Yuba County Sheriff's Office and Wheatland Police Department, safely recovered a missing 16-year old girl Sunday in southern Oregon.

An Oregon man was taken into custody during the traffic stop in the Grants Pass area and is presently held on criminal charges. Lieutenant Gregg Hastings says State Police were contacted by the Yuba County Sheriff's Office in California Sunday, over a missing 16-year old female from Wheatland, California.

The teen girl is described as having a diminished mental capacity. Police say the man met the girl via the Internet, possibly MySpace, though that was not clear at this point.

Hastings says the man, identified as 37-year old David Anthony Faboo of Hillsboro, Oregon, drove to Wheatland, California in a vehicle preliminarily described only as a white pickup.

"Their joint investigation indicated Faboo was attempting to take the female juvenile out-of-state into Oregon."

Additional information led police to believe that while the 16-year old girl and the 37-year old man were driving northbound, the girl realized her error and began text messaging a friend requesting he come and get her. Wheatland officers worked with the girl's cell phone company to monitor cell phone pings generated by the text messages and tracked the northbound movements.

Hastings says that with limited vehicle information, dispatchers at the OSP Southern Command Center in Central Point began doing research in Oregon Department of Motor Vehicle files and located an Oregon registered vehicle to Faboo described as a white 2000 Dodge R15 pickup.

OSP Trooper Chris Walker and Trooper Brett Keller staged their patrol vehicle on northbound Interstate 5 in the Grants Pass area and observed the pickup at 12:20 PM, Hastings said. The pickup was stopped without incident and the girl and Faboo were contacted.

Both were detained and subsequently brought back to the OSP Central Point Area Command office for further investigation and interviews with OSP detectives.

Faboo was arrested for Kidnap in the Second Degree and Custodial Interference. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail with bail set at $1,015,000.00.

Later that evening, the female juvenile was reunited with family members at the OSP Central Point Area Command office.

Yuba County Sheriff's Detectives initiated contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as the victim was transported from California and into Oregon; and the FBI has also initiated an investigation.

Earlier today, a felony arrest warrant was issued by the Superior Court of California, Yuba County, for Faboo charging him with Kidnap with Intent to Rape (Cal Penal Code Section 209(b)(1) with bail set at $1,000,000. There are several reminders that law enforcement and online communities such as MySpace agree can help in making safe decision about using online communities. This information can be found at myspace.com/misc/safetyTips.html

• Parents should talk to your kids about why they use MySpace, how they communicate with others and how they represent themselves.

* Don't lie about your age. Online communities are public spaces and avoid posting any information that would make it easy for a stranger to find you.

* Don't post anything that could embarrass you or expose you to danger.

* Remember that people are not always who they say they are. Ask your children to be careful about adding strangers to their friends list.

* Caution your children about meeting strangers at any time.
