(PORTLAND, Ore.) - A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle tonight in Portland. The incident shut down traffic for hours while investigators went over what had happened. Det. Mary Wheat with Portland Police says officers responded to the area of Southeast Cesar E Chavez Blvd and Powell Blvd tonight at approximately 6:20 p.m. on the call of a pedestrian that had been struck. "When officers arrived, they found a deceased adult woman at the scene who had been struck by a vehicle while she was trying to cross Cesar Chavez," Wheat said. She added that, "The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police." The bureau's Major Crash Team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation and do not believe at this time that the driver was impaired, according to Wheat. This is an ongoing investigation. Wheat says the name of the deceased pedestrian and the driver will be released after appropriate notifications have been made.
