(SALEM, Ore.) - A 23-year old Salem man has been charged with murder and burglary in connection with the death of Salem resident Florence Boatwright. The Marion County Sheriff's Office say they have charged Darius Pittman with the homicide that occurred at 403 45th Ave SE in Salem Tuesday, November 28th. It was reported at about 3:30 AM. An arraignment on those charges is set for 8:30 AM tomorrow, Friday, February 23rd. Pittman has been lodged in the Marion County Jail on other charges unrelated to this case since January 4th. 77-year old Florence Boatwright and her husband Joe had reported a burglary in their home Oct. 11th. The Boatwrights have two daughters and a son. Friends say the entire family had just gotten together in Salem for a biennial "Christmas for Thanksgiving" celebration. Florence Boatwright grew up in Salem and lived there most of her life. She was a long-time member of Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on State Street. Friend of Darius December 27, 2021 7:13 pm (Pacific time)
I knew Darius since elementary school and grew up with him. I remember when he grew up his mother basically let him do whatever he wanted and he did not have structure. He was easily influenced by the bad crowd. He was a protector to his family and friends. I’m glad I came across this article because I’m going to reconnect with him and write to him. People make mistakes and if you don’t forgive others God will not forgive you.

I grew up knowing the kind soft side of this boy ... I'm so sad to see this is what has happened. I read through the comments here and I'm so sorry for the loss of this woman's life. Growing up in Tucson where I believe this person got into drugs, I've personally seen the "faces of Meth" developed in childhood friends and sadly even family (search the AD campaign) -- this is a serious problem in our world, what mental illness is the smallest forms can manifest into and drive someone like Darius who may have just been around the wrong people, and those people eventually pressured him to try it "just once". There is no "just once" with this -- the mind turns to into a irrational machine, no mercy and 1 goal -- get more Drugs. I've never been personally around it, but I've had family make choices after starting I never would have thought possible, like choosing drugs over a child, or like Darius-- a petty theft confronted turned murder? How? How is this possible. I wondered what ever happened to Darius... and after all of these years, I decided to search his name. I'm so sad that he's done this. If he's found himself while sober in jail, I wonder if he's able to be him again, or is the mind ruined, torched and changed forever? Is what makes "us", or the self a product of our spirit, or simply the chemical makeup of how our brain functions? I have to think that for this kind person I remember to do something so violent to an elderly woman, I worry it's all just neuroscience broken at the core. How do we fix this? How do we stop this and how do we make it right? I suppose we don't give drugs the change with "just one time"...

I grew up with Darius our mothers were best friends....I know in my heart he couldn't do something like this in the right state of mind(my opinion at all) but Meth is very powerful and has killed many of people in all ways....anyone who has ever done it for a good period of time knows or has seen how it can make people nuts and mix drugs with any kind of depression or A.D.D or A.D.H.D.bipolar....etc...the drug ends up medicating that disorder and ends up making it worse to the point of being schizo....none of this means it right to take someones life but unfortunately I have to high school friends that used Meth heavy and are now schizo's to the point of put in hospitals and just the past year two others in for murder.....I feel bad for both side...you can never replace someone or make it right....and unfortunately speaking from someone who was able to break away from the Drug...it hurts even more to see friends in this situation...

Time to face the consequence. Wether on drugs or not, you know the difference between right and wrong. I don't know what to think about Darius anymore. He didn't care about no one but himself, so why care about him. All I feel is pity that he's at a dead end. I'd rather be dead than be in prison.

This is a very unfortunate situation. One family lost a loved one to murder and another family lost a loved one to drugs. I knew Darius when he lived in Hawaii for awhile...back then he was a good, sweet and motivated young man trying to succeed in life. Unfortunately he decided to move and it seems things were not too successful for him thereafter.

I know him too. Sweetest guy in the world. I know first hand, drugs, especially METH, is the cause. This could be you, stay up for 1 week on meth and see if you can think straight. I love this guy and perhaps he just made a very bad decision. I know he is sorry.
anonymous April 10, 2007 3:55 pm (Pacific time)
I know this guy personally...we went to high school together and also dated for awhile, it saddens me that he did this. Meth makes people do crazy things!
